Default Spamming on limewire

Everyone should be careful of certain files, especially wmv, mpeg, or mov files that are 106.7 KB It is one of two major problems that limewire has yet to solve. This problem is people have set up a program in their own computers (most with a T3 or higher connection) that monitors incoming searches (you can manually monitor incoming searches by clicking on the monitor tab) and the program instantly creates a filename to match your search criteria and the file that is attached is an advertisement of one of the filetypes listed above and of the size 106.7 KB. So when you choose to download one of these 106.7 KB files, you are getting a customized version of an advertisement that has nothing to do with the file you were looking for. As limewire users we need to do our part to fix this before these advertisers learn how to write programs that vary the file size on these advertisements. Right now that is one of the only ways we have to distinguish these bad files from the rest.

The other problem is of course, the corrupt mp3 files from T3 connections. Please do not download any sound files from a T3 user. It is simply too dangerous at the moment. There have been people that have downloaded harmful viruses by trying this. Other times the files do nothing at all and you have just wasted your time.

A lot of rumors were going around that you can fix this by doing a block host on the T3 user. Not true. I'm thinking that when you block a host, that it only blocks their ability to send you chat messages....I think I read that in a tip of the day. So please don't anyone be too reliant on that to filter out junk until you check it out for sure.

Not to mention the fact that I have tried blocking the 106.7 wmv carriers and actually kept track of their IP's to see if they came back up in the next search, after the block host, and they still did. I'm thinking there is a false sense of security with this feature and that limewire really should do a block host that actually blocks them from participating in your search.

About all anyone can do is keep asking limewire through this for some changes to protect us from these corrupt and sometimes damaging files.

Nope, if you do a block host, you also block all search results from that host.

Try filtering all files containing ".wmv" in the keyword filter.

Thumbs down blocking spammers

This issue seems to be of major concern to many users, me included.

Will Limewire take on board on concerns, please, and do something to enable effective blocking?

My emails to limewire elicited no response - don't forget you're not the only supplier guys.

These files are ridiculous. Why doesn't liewire have feature to block files of a certain size.

The other filesize to watch out for is 36.9 kb. Always the same Ipod advert jobbies.

Very annoying and very easy to solve by the Limewire programmers.

Unless it's them putting the adverts on there???? Think I may be onto something???

Just tried to DL and got an advertisement to go to a website, www.e3club.com. I clicked on "Browse host" and got:
172.188.26.109:6350 (309).

Any way to "slap their hand?" Or, is this the "price" we pay for "free" DLs?

another topic thats been discussed a thousand times. Why cant you guys figureout the size of a file? and if its too small its not that file. and spammers are apart of Gnutella and has nothing to do with Limewire. Why not say Gnutella? Limewire is only the app that connects you and is not responsible for spam/viruses/trojans and worms, and yes, its the price you pay for stealing, downloading, pirated software & games. Limewire has filters, use them to block unwanted material. I have yet to have any problems with Limewire or spammers.

What I have been watching of late if the connections window.

Any host that has a high message to time ration I kill. A good server will send around 1500 to 2000 messages per hour.

When you get one that sends 1000 in the first few minutes, you are pretty much guaranteed spam

I also take a note of the ip address and when I start to see multiples with similar IP address I block the lower ranges of them. IE 72,74,*,*.

Maybe there should be a database with all the IP's people block. That could be used to zero out the spammers pretty well.

I know there are a lot of address starting with 24.*.*.* and 72.*.*.* that give a lot of spam in searches.

I likewise tend to block those ranges of ip's and yes, the spam tends to be in those ranges. The ones that are not I tend to decide whether to or not block them at the time. Some use network ip's, those network ip's with obviously a high number (very large network set up) I tend to block too. Those from a small network I do not block. Some people accidentally download the spam and immediately share them onto the network so I try not to sacrifice those ips. People should delete incomplete files they realise are spam and remove from their download folder the spam files once they realise they are fake/corrupt.
