Cannot play ANY avi files downloaded from lw

I am new to Limewire , but not to p2p sharing. Infact I thought I was quite an expert until i started to use Limewire. I have never had problems with downloaded movies in any other p2p program, including bearshare , however , EVERY avi movie i have dowloaded from Limewire will not play on any of my players. I get the error message "file format not supported"!
It seems typical that this is the only program I have had to pay for as well.
I am using Windows xp, and Limewire version 4.0.8.
I really hope someone can help me.
Thanks in anticipation.

You can do either or both of 2 things. 1. Dwnld lots of xtra codecs or 2. use a player with built-in codecs.
1. http://www.divx-digest.com/software/nimo_pack.html
2. VLC (a free player that plays everything xcept the odd wmv file - can also play dvd's & vcd's)

how much memory does VLC take

i got 7 gigabytes total on this computer:(

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 01:56 PM

On a mac it takes up 17.1 MB. I'd guess it'd be about the same for windows.

does it download like a bunch of toolbars and search things that will slow down my computer?

Does it have spyware like WMP, no not to my knowledge. You just open it, it's a very simple program but very effective. It's fine I assure you. On a mac I can just drag & drop a movie onto it. I don't know about windows version though. It does not use much ram.

Windows self-extracting package:

vlc-0.8.1-win32.exe (6.7MB) :
Select a mirror :
VIA, Ecole Centrale Paris (France)
Twente University (Netherlands)
Cr@ns, ENS Cachan (France)
Providence University (Taiwan)
Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (Brazil)
Windows zip package (identical to the above but without the installer):

vlc-0.8.1-win32.zip (9.8MB) :
Select a mirror :
VIA, Ecole Centrale Paris (France)
Twente University (Netherlands)
Cr@ns, ENS Cachan (France)
Providence University (Taiwan)
Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (Brazil)

the things under the "select a mirror"s are my options. i dont even know what a mirror is:confused:

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 02:22 PM

A mirror site is purely an alternative site to dwnld from. Choose the one closest to you. It has nothing to do with language. I dwnlded mine from France yet I live over the opposite side of the world. :p

alright thanks alot lord of the rings dude. i just made a user name thing today for problems with limewire and on most of my posts you have been a huge help.

Peacock Lady December 9th, 2004 03:00 PM

I already have the free players you have mentioned, and still they will not play these avi files. I have never had any problems with other p2p programs before, but limewire seems to have lots of them.

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 03:09 PM

If VLC won't play them then it sounds like those files might have a problem. Do they have an extension? eg: file name.avi

Can you do a test for me to see if there''s any interference in LW's incoming: Bug Report instructions & sample image IS this true/false?
Do you have firewalls? If so, have you allowed LW access thru them. There is a chance you're receiving damaged download packets due to a firewall or nat or something else.

Did you dwnld these files from T1 or T3 sources or cable/dsl or modem?

how do i set it to default avi files in vlc even for preview and stuff?

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2004 03:20 PM

this is Spacoli: outside of LW, select an avi file. Now go to File>Properties>Open with... & select VLC. Choose always to open with VLC. VLC will now always open avi files & will open when you launch an avi file in LW. You could also do that for any other video files you have problems opening. Except there is the occasional wmv file VLC has difficulty opening.
