Try to ensure you both of available upld & dwnld slots. If you're both too busy then you'll have problems connecting. Also set yourselves to enable Chat (Tools>Options>Chat.) See this: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=30911 It is easier to browse one another if you both have Chat enabled!
