Question limewire probs, are they related to TCP thing

Limewire used to work but now it doesn't. It has an excellent connection but when i try to download all I get is need more sources even if there are 90+

I run Windows XP and it recently installed an update and a firewall on my comp, i thought this could be prob so turned it off but didn't work. The problems only started after the limewire update 4.2.6.

These are my connections (T1 i think on a uni network):

Local Area Connection - Realtek RTL8139/810x family fast ethernet NIC

1394 Connection net adapter

Have tried deleting .limewire folder, did a bug report thing said false, downloaded a new java thing, did something like writing gnutella and writing some port number and adding it to a list

tried to install winmx cause had given up on limewire and it said:

"win mx is unable to receive incoming TCP connections from the internet. This could be due to many things, such as settings in your operating system, a software based firewall, the use of a proxy server, or a broadband router/firewall. Depending on your exact configuration, you may be able to open or forward an incoming TCP port, but it is not required."

I realise it says this is not required but could this have something to do with limewire problems or not can anyone suggest anything my firends on the same network can get file sharing programmes to work??????

Just tried and win mx doesnt work either can someone please help

It sounds like you updated to XP SP2 right? This has caused so many people problems. Some have even uninstalled it.

Configure your firewalls to give LW full access: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml (ie: XP firewall & any other you have.)

Try to force ip: Force IP instructions & sample image

Go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ & it should say Test Page was a success. What happened for you?

Update your Java: Java 1.5 (take the JRE) (LW needs the latest.)

So you're trying to connect at uni. Are you also trying to connect at home without success?

Thanks for advice, yes did update to windows xp sp2:

Tried configuring firewalls, forcing IP, my test page was a success and I have downloaded the java program but still won't work. I have also tried not letting limewire automatically connect at the startup and then connecting later on but that didn't work

Haven't tried to connect from home as we have dial up and its pretty poor even for surfing the web.

Is it now a case of deleting the windows update or do you have any other ideas?

I'm not sure why you'd need SP2 if you'e not running a company network. That's what it was designed for. But people tend to update without investigating what it's for & whether there's been any problems with it. There is a patch for it but it doesn't work for everybody. In the connections section there's a sticky or 2 about sp2.

You could try this: Repair LimeWire using the Add/Remove Programs utility. Go to Control Panel then Add/Remove Programs & click on Limewire on the Change/Remove button & it comes up with options and one of them is Repair.

You could instead try the beta 4.3.2 http://www.limewire.com/english/content/beta.shtml or an earlier version http://www9.limewire.com:82/download/
