Frustrated Newbie

I have downloaded several .avi files but everytime I try to play them, I get an 'error downloading codec'. Only the audio will play but the video won't. I have tried downloading compressors, decompressors and converters but still an unable to view the files. Can someone please help!?!

You need Codecs do a search on the forum.
