Cant Delete Incomplete Files I have read threads about not being able to delete files from the Incomplete Folder. Instructions were given on how to delete the files by going into the following destination and deleting the registry value. Registry Editor HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT SystemFileAssociations avi. shellex propertyhandler I tried this. However, My files are MPEGs and my MPEG folder does not contain a propertyhandler folder. Just a ContextMenuHandlers Folder. So it didn't work. Is there anything else i can do? Thanks |
Either the files won't delete b/c they're being used by another program such as sharing by LW. Or, something worse. Either delete them after a restart with LW closed or use this: http://ask-leo.com/archives/000085.htm |
Thanks for the advice, but that link didn't work. Also, I'm kinda computer handicapped so if you could maybe give me some brief instructions on what to do when i get there that would be awesome. Thanks Oh yeah. I tried to delete them in safe mode, no luck. Is there anyway i could delete them with explorer.exe stopped and then do it through the command prompt? |
Sorry they moved the page! Try: http://ask-leo.com/why_cant_i_delete_this_file.html See the delinvfile link. |
CRAP... I think I have a bigger problem on my hands. The files don't show up on the browser when i use that DELINVFILE program. In fact, it's almost as if the files don't exist. The details list on the left hand side of the folder says the size, date modified, file type. But when I open up the properties from the file tab (can't do it by right clicking) the properties are completely blank.... ? If anyone could possibly point me in the right direction to get help with this problem, I'd appreciate. Thanks |
CRAP ...cont It might help to mention that when i try to delete these files, nothing happens at all, Not even a message from windows saying that it can't be deleted. I can't modify them in anyway. It's like windows is just ignoring them. |
Hmmm sounds like you may have spyware or malware on your comp. Have you tried starting in safe mode and then tried to delete them that way? Best of luck |
I am unfamiliar with malware. If it is spyware, spybot wont get rid of it. I did try to delete them in safe mode. If anyone is having the same problem, please post. |
OH NOOOOOO! I am an complete moron. Somehow I erased the entire contents of my documents!!!!!!! I tryed deleting incomplete folder via UNC. Please tell me there is something i can do to get it back. PLEASE. |
Try PC Inspector File Recovery, you can find indirect links here: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=34134 |
sigh... Well, that was a total mess. I got some of it back, but most of it is lost. The good news is that the files that wouldn't delete are gone, lol. Some things you just gotta learn the hard way. Thanks to all who helped out. |
"Well, that was a total mess. I got some of it back, but most of it is lost. The good news is that the files that wouldn't delete are gone, lol. Some things you just gotta learn the hard way. " I needed a good chuckle and it seems jonny did too :) |

In normal viewing it seems as if it's a single avi file, yadayada.avi. When I viewed both transferred versions through delinvfile thingy, I saw that each was a folder containing three files, an ico, an avi and another with the avi file for either being only 3 letters long, rather than the multicharacter name the file read through normal means. I could not delete the folders of either so I went inside of each. In one version I deleted eache file individually successfully, and having done that, was able to delete the folder containing them within the recyler bin. In the other folder, still residing in the recycler bin, I was able to delete all but the avi file contained in that folder, and I could not delete the folder either. I have rebooted the computer many times and dealt solely with the recyler bin each time, yet keep getting a message saying the file is being used by another process and refers to the file by the 3 digit avi file name rather than the long name it shows as in the recycler bing. Using conventional methods, I keep getting a message saying that the file is being used by another process. And while I had this problem yesterday, without using any other software or processes, my CPU is constantly running at 100% and "Explorer", not "IE" is reaching as much as 200MB of use, whereas it's usually anywhere from 20MB to 80MB. How do I disassociate this file from any other thingy using it, how do I trace what it may be associated with now? This problem is WASTING MY VALUABLE TIME!!!!!! HELP! |
I'd tend to think like the others that it's some kind of malware. Have you checked the file with your antivirus program (with up to date definitions of course) & checked it with 1. ad-ware (FREE), & 2. Spybot - Search & Destroy (FREE) Well the alternative way I use is mac osx related & means starting up in a different OS. I guess for windows you might try a different account login with admin priv. But that's if the file shows up in a different login. Or in a variation of Peerless's advice, put that file in a folder A. Create another folder B & put a copy of any file (but not the bad one) inside & rename it to the one you can't get rid of. Put folder A inside a new folder C. Then add the folder B to folder C to replace it. Either that or put the file from folder B into folder A to replace it. |
