downloading prob (suspect my firewall is blocking connection)

hi everyone!!

im having some trouble downloading from limewire, sometimes the "connecting" dialog is always showing and sometimes i start downloading from 2kb and then it stops to 0kb

i am using a 512k connection with a netgear dg834g firewall/router

i suspect the firewall is blocking the incoming connections but i dont know how to fix this

your help is greatly appreciated

thankz in advance,

Configure your firewalls here: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml

Do you know if your netgear uses UPnP (Universal Play & play) technology?

I just went to Netgear support site & search it but didn't seem to find anything about UPnP which suggests perhaps you should manually port forward your device.

The steps are:
1. Set up a static ip (very important to do 1st!)
2. Forward a port (use port 6346)
3. Within LW: Manual port forward instructions & sample image & 2 posts after that.

* For steps 1 & 2 see: (A) http://www.portforward.com/netgear/dg834g.htm &

(B) Netgear Support instructions: http://kbserver.netgear.com/inquira/...99#__highlight & select port forwarding at top of page.

yeh my modem supports uPnP
i enabled it in my modem's configure page

also i fowarded incoming ports to 6346 but it still doesnt seem to help,

i can actually download now but it is VERY VERY slow, gets up to about 5kb/s and then drops to 0kb/s and stays there...

also i already have a static ip too and it is set up

Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is it True/False?

Perhaps you could try deleting your LW preferences which sometimes makes a difference. Make a note of all your LW settings 1st however b/c you'll need to reset them. Try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire

If your netgear supports UPnP then port forwarding isn't or shouldn't be necessary. But either way it won't hurt. If you use it in UPnP mode then LW should be set likewise, but if you use port forwarding then set it for manual port forward in LW, but if the port is already forwarded then I guess you have the choice between the 2.

Try to choose sources that have 3 or 4 star quality which means better chance of connection & also from those search results that show a large no. under the # column. Sometimes stopping the downld & then reselecting from the search results to downld can refresh the downld. Also researching the topic can help too.

i have researched this topic for several days now, ever since i got my new 512k connection 5 days ago ( before i had dialup)

i even tryed using other p2p progz such as imesh and winmx, none of them seem to work......i forwarded the necesarry ports for each prog too

also i have disabled the windows firewall and zonealarm

still doesnt work, i could download fine on my 56k connection but now that ive changed to dsl i cant seem to dl anything off these p2p progz...

stigmata April 24th, 2005 05:55 AM

also i tested the bug report thing u said to do

in the "received incoming this session" it says true

Lord of the Rings April 24th, 2005 07:55 AM

Try a different port no. Even try port 80. To do this go to Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewalls & change listening port. Also see Alternate Port Selection Use UPnP or forward the new port no. Your isp provider might be filtering your p2p programs.

LotR, thanks for your help so far i really appreciate it ,

now i strongly suspect that my isp is blocking access to p2p sites,

do u know any ways i can use p2p progz without changing to a different isp?

Lord of the Rings April 24th, 2005 08:07 AM

Use a proxy. But you should be warned that you may need to try out many before you find one that works.

You can view thru these:

ok lordoftherings

thanks for your help, i'll keep u posted on my progress :)

stigmata April 25th, 2005 04:26 AM

I can actually connect to limewire now , i can even search but i just cant download - when i click on a file it just is always "connecting"

Also i checked with my isp and they DO NOT block any ports/p2p services

i cant seem to find the answer to my problem!!!!

note that even the bug test came out to b "true"

helppppp

You're half way there then. After opening LW don't rush into using it. Let it settle. If you're sharing lots then it should help you search & downld if people are uplding from you. The longer LW is on the more stable & better it is to use.

Just remember to select those with 3 or 4 stars & lots of numbers under the # column in the search results.

If you used to D/L at a speed more than 10k/b and suddenly it dropped to 0k/b here is what i did and poof my D/L speed is back!

Go Tools,Options Bug Reports:Check if, Received incoming this session: true or false? if true no problem, if false you may have a firewall blocking.

Next Tools,Option, Advanced, Firewall Config: Put 80 in the listen on port instead of 6346. Next Use Manual Port Fowarding and enter 80.

Next Hit Connect!

DONE!

stigmata April 28th, 2005 06:21 PM

yeh i changed my port to 80 and it works now!!!

download @ 15 - 40 kb/s

thanks dyingtolive
