Unwanted Downloads Hi I have noticed that alot of files (which i DID NOT download) have appeared im my Limewire downloads folder. What is happening? altogether there is 200MB worth of unwanted files. I keep deleting them but they just keep coming back. PLEASE HELP!!!!! |
I have the exact same problem!!!!! downloaded one zip file now i have an entire collection of them!!!!!!! Keep deleting them but they keep showing up. aaarrrrrrghhhh!!! Please help |
Looks like you have a Virus. It came with one of the files you downloaded recently (e.g. the one zip file you downloaded) or through other channels like eMail, Web or one of the countless security holes in Windows. It tries to replicate itself by creating files with attractive names so that thoughtless user download it from you and the game starts over... ... FIX: get an anti virus software |
Thanks, i have norton anti virus, i can't beleive it didn't pick it up. It only occurs when limewire is open, even for a minute. I then open my shared folder and there is countless zip files all the sames size (400kb) of various software.... delete them but they keep appearing. During a virus scan now... any other suggestions? |
I have Mc Afee Personal Firewall i cant believe i didnt detect this. So what you're saying is that we have to find the file that has the virus and delete it?? |
@desperate Re: Norton  http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=38193 @Spitfire9494: A Firewall is NOT an Anti-Virus Software and will thus not protect your computer from this type of malicious software! Well, and trying to find and delete the infected files manually is a hopeless undertaking! |
Thanks! i have done a virus scan through my hard drive... hope this works. If not should i restore my computer to an earlier point... will this remove the virus.... |
doing a restore will not remove the virus. I also have the unwanted and unknown downloads and it doesn't seem to affect my computer. of course my comp is almost 2 yrs old, so is slow by todays standards. what I guessed whats happening is that when u download someone elses file, all these other files are probably stored in the same place that the other user stored his zip file and it was automatically downloaded with the file you chose. I don't know...makes sence to me:rolleyes: I've only been with limewire less than 6 months and have only downloaded one virus (and boy was it a doozy!!!) and don't seem to be having any problems with comp now, other than being slower than usual (which I can live with:) ) Unless it's causing you problems, I wouldn't worry about it. As for taking up space on your comp, unless you are short on memory (or whatever it is), I wouldn't trip on it. Also a lot of virus's downloaded, could be a false positive. |
ok so i have done a virus scan with Mc Afee Virus Scan, cleaned all viruses found and still the files are there. Starting to get a little annoyed now. |
What you need to do is to eliminate the source file causing this. I found an unusaul file on my hard drive. It was titled TEMP, it too was a zip file with the exact same size of 400kb. Do a general serach on your computer for it and eliminate it, it should also be accompanied by an x + y text file, delete these too. At the same time delete ALL the files in your shared folder, i mean EVERYTHING!!! It only worked and dissapeared for me when i deleted all these files. Then empty out your recycle bin. This worked for me, not too sure if its the same for everyone else! |
Spitfire9494 Rkapsi and Desparate have given you good advice and I hope your problems have now been solved. If you followed the link Rkapsi provided you will see a post I made outlining my, somewhat, paranoid policy, i.e. I don't download anything that can run, auto-run or could be hidden in a compressed file. As Rkapsi said, you were infected by downloading stuff through your firewall, remember that you told your firewall to let anything in coming via port 6346, it just happened that the stuff you downloaded were infected. Also, most anti-virus software cannot check if something being downloaded has a virus in it, they can only check once the file is complete. As long as you are aware of your protective apps limitations then you can take certain steps to work around them and, like I have done, use extra utilities to bolster your protection. UK Bob |
The Virus is maybe (probably) newer than your Virus scanner or rather the Virus denfinition database (as a Windows and P2P user you should update the database daily or at least weekly). Just for your info: be prepaired for the worst case that your virus scanner was disarmed by the virus. For this case see the manual of your virus scanner! |
Right again Rkapsi I had this same problem in the recent past, something my son had downloaded had disabled my Nortons Firewall and Antivirus (both 2003). It took me almost 12 hours to get them back into working condition. However, in my case, the manuals were of no use I had to go onto the Symantec web site, read through the knowledgebase, to get the answers I needed. Which turned out that I had to delete both NAV and NPF (2003) and then reinstall and update them. UK Bob |
Cool boy had a pretty good post on the subject... http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=38705 The suggestions & solutions should help as well... |
Thanx for all your help guys:) |
I HAD the same problem I have been having this problem after downloading some sims items and games, so did anyone else with them download sims items also? Anyway, I wiped out everything on my computer today and do recall deleting a zip named TEMP which threw me because i would never have downloaded that!! It was accompanied by and X and Y like DESPERATE said he had. I also uninstalled and deleted all programs/materials downloaded since problem began. Not a big problem, but I deleted 1300 files today, so kinda annoying...anyway...I also downloaded Microsofts new Spyware beta and although not 100% impressed, it allows you to manually make changes to registry and running programs easier than current way. So all those crap folders that I could not delete (being used!!) I could finally easily close all instances and delete all registry entries in one place. Might be worth a try! Good luck and if sims are being downloaded by alot of ya'll I would like to know. Especially the mysterious 400mg that are simply a setup. PS..If you are not using Winzip I recommend it, for those of you who don't know you can right click a file and explore everything in it without unzipping it. I feel much safer knowing what exactly I am opening first!! |
