P1SS Poor Download Speeds

In the last two weeks my limewire downloaiding speed has completly fallen on its ****. I'm lucky if I can get 2k downloads whereas before i used to get 20-40k downloads. I've not changed anything or settings that they used to be, however Im about to chuck the pc out the window. As LOTR wanted, here is a summary of my setup.

1) OS = Windows XP Pro with SP1
2) Firewalls = SPI (part of router) and ZoneAlarm Pro (both have been disabled for testing purposes)
3) RAM = 256Mb
4) HDD Space Avail = 36Gb
5) Connection Type = Wireless Broadband (512k/256k by Netvigator)
6) Modem / router = Netvigator IP Wireless connected to a netgear WGR614v2
7) Connecting from = Home
8) Versions = 4.8.1 and java 1.5.0_1

UpNp is enabled in the router, so I've not bothered port fowarding (Never had to do it in the past anyway).

Here is a copy of my Bug Report File
LimeWire version 4.8.1
Java version 1.5.0_01 from Sun Microsystems Inc.
Windows XP v. 5.1 on x86

Please help. I've had to start using Ares as a temporary solution as I have high speed downloads using that.

Suggests something is partially blocking LW's access. This might be a firewall. Configure your firewall to allow LW full access using these instructions: http://www.limewire.com/english/content/firewalls.shtml
And it's wise to only have one active firewall b/c FW's have been known to interfere with each other. So if you have another FW, decide which one you want active, XP FW or the other.

This might also be helpful for you to see: To continue files downlding (click on link)

jrolson85 June 18th, 2005 06:06 PM

Also have the same problem.

tongr01 June 19th, 2005 01:37 AM

I'll try disabling the firewalls again and will post the bug report again for analysis. Off to work now so cant do it at this moment in time - » Rob

Lord of the Rings June 19th, 2005 02:03 AM

No need to disable your firewalls. Just configure them to allow LW full access; instructions: Firewall configuration instructions
By the way, it's not advisable to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other. McAffee has also been noted for Corrupting files I guess because it wasn't configured properly.

tongr01 June 19th, 2005 02:12 PM

Disabled 1 of the firewalls. Gave the other one full access rights to limewire. Still getting the same thing, Any idea's????

Can you give us a total desciption of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider?
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.

Just to let you know I changed the MTU setting on my router from 1500 to 1492 (for PPoE) and now limewire is running normally again.

Thanks for everyones help in trying to resolve it. Try this fix on your setup and see if it helps.

Rob.

freemovement July 10th, 2005 08:46 AM

tongr01 can you elaborate further on how you solve the router problem ?

tongr01 July 10th, 2005 08:51 AM

My ISP uses PPoE and when I was checking through my router settings to disable my SPI firewall, I noticed a setting for the MTU. This was set to 1500 and it recommends 1492 for PPoE.

I just changed it to that setting and it worked fine after that.

Need help w/ slow connection (data inside)

i plucked the following questions from this thread, and hope with my answers someone might be able to help. my connection is painfully slow (with .mpg files and 6 hosts i get up to 90KB/s d/l - but single-source files are almost always <5, most often 0-3 .. VERY rare occasions 40.

i also notice people are getting pathetic upload speeds from me - and would like to help frustrated others who want files from me too!

1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98) XP Pro
2. What firewalls you have? Sygate
3. How much ram? 512 MB
4. Hard Disk space available? 28 GB
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) cable (~3.5 KB/s)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers? Netgear WGB511
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)? home
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version. 4.8.1 - 1.4.2
9. Who is your isp provider? comcast
10. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user. first try (but problem the same as before recent addition of router)

** had given limewire full access in sygate, but not via advanced settings. went to advanced and 'act as client - act as server' were both checked (for both netgear and limewire) as was 'allow ICMP' - there are no values entered (i'm now in over my head when going beyond what i thought was full access with a basic check)

** XP firewall is not enabled

limewire won't allow copy/paste of bug report (how do other people do it? typing all that or allowed in pro version or...?) but here is some data (don't know what's important...)

connected - true
ultrapeer connections - 3
acting as shielded leaf - true

active HTTP downloaders - 2

i've had computers for 20 years, but am am new to cable, P2P, router.. not technical and this area is completely foreign to me. in other words, i'm not an idiot, but i'm an idiot.

thanks for any help!

tongr01 July 10th, 2005 03:43 PM

Hi Jill,

We need to get your Received Incoming This Session saying true instead of false. Disable your SPI firewall on the router and then try. Also change your MRU setting to 1492 and try. If that doesnt try 1400.

Let us know if it doesnt work.

Rob.

moonscape July 10th, 2005 04:09 PM

the problem existed before i intalled the router two days ago, i.e. the router didn't worsen the problem. that's why my ignorant lay-person's guess is that there's something in my firewall or other config that's the problem. (and - i don't know how to disable the router firewall - netgear walked me through installation...)

sadly, i have no clue where to find the MRU setting - because i don't know what it is.

i know how hard it is when clueless people ask for help ...

Disable your sygate firewall and then try. Also how many ppl are you downloading from

moonscape July 10th, 2005 04:41 PM

i installed limewire a couple of weeks ago and went through reading and tweaking since then. the problem has always been the same.

i had disabled the firewall and it made no difference, tried it again now, and same. i never uninstalled and reinstalled limewire, though will try that tomorrow if it seems it could be worth a shot. i know to preserve incomplete files and the downloads.dat file - anything else?

should i call comcast and ask if there's anything on their end, re P2P? i looked at a listing and comcast got a user thumbs-up for P2P.

guess i want to try everything possible before messing w/ my newly-installed router. i had posted about this problem last week before i even set up the router - and i'm concerned i'll end up with netgear tech support to bail me out (though they were fine....)

thanks for your input, bob.

tongr01 July 11th, 2005 02:47 AM

What are the download speeds you are getting again?

Completely remove limewire and then reinstall the program (do a search of your hard drive for limewire and delete all folders call that). The main one that holds all the settings is called ".limewire" and this is located in the root of your user account folder (eg C:\Documents and Settings\Rob). If you delete this before a complete reinstall and then launch limewire again it will ask you some setup questions.

Give it a try then post the results here.

having same problem

I am having the same problem with excessively slow download speeds. I have always had download speeds not in excess of 15 kb/s.

I do not upload to this network, as my firewalls do not allow connections to my computer. I use Symantec Corporate AV, ZoneAlarm, and a D-Link DI-524 wireless router. The problem existed before any of these protections. I used NIS and NAV before.

The problem cannot by caused by spyware. I use Spybot S&D (1.3) and SpywareBlaster (3.4), the best programs known to the computer world.

Any information would help. :)

I heard 1 of u saying something bout changing the MTU setting to 1492 or sumthin.. wads that? I have been having problems wif my limewire for like a few months already... I am able to connect and search but when downloading, i get 0-2 KB/s. It was 25-50 Kb/s before....
