Slow Download Speed

Hi i have limewire pro and i have 256 kbps ADSL Connection and i used to get 20 kbps max download speed but now i get 6 kbps download speed and i downloaded from the 10 hosts but still the same 6 kbps can anyone here please help??????????

Lord of the Rings July 18th, 2005 02:44 AM

You're confusing kbps with KB/s. kbps = kilo bits per second. whereas KB/s = Kilo Bytes per seconds. There's 8 bits in a byte.

You have the same speed as me. I get 27 KB/s total after overhead loss. It can vary depending on how far you are from the phone exchange.

See the following link & follow all the off-shoot links to find hints & extra skills to solve your problem: To continue files downlding (click on link)

lilthugz July 18th, 2005 03:36 AM

I get everything now my isp is throttling my speed from p2p but i get good speed from http and its 30 KB/S max and my isp said they only throttle the p2p speed from 1pm to 1am and after 1am i get 20 KB/S max well thats sounds good for a cheap internet lol

Lord of the Rings July 18th, 2005 04:27 AM

Who is your isp provider? That's interesting they admit to filtering it. Sometimes they admit it, sometimes not. So your isp does not filter p2p during off-peak times.

lilthugz July 18th, 2005 05:40 PM

Yeah thats right i was downloading from limewire a file on midnight the speed was gone to 30 kb/s so its very good to leave my downloading at midnight and during the day download from http websites :)
But i want to change my plan to 1 MB/S plan and 10 GB usage do u think its a good idea to change it because they said if i use this plan they wont throttle my p2p downloads and what speed would i get from limewire?

Octavian July 20th, 2005 04:24 AM

I get a download of either nothing of 1-2 kb/s

About 2 weeks ago, I could download 1 GB of data in a day

Now it's taking forever to download a 4mb clip!!!!

I can't even download the magnetmix scenes!!!

Can anybody help??

lil-thugz July 20th, 2005 06:29 PM

Well tell us what type of connection you use and whats the speed and does your isp limit your speed I mean limit your p2p speeds?
Well my isp limit the speed during the day which i get about 5kb/s max but at night they dont limit the speed and my speed goes 30 kb/s max on any p2p program so i just play on http during the day and download from p2p at night

Octavian July 20th, 2005 10:39 PM

Oh no, they don't limit the speed at all

I had LW for two months with a connection of 512 kbps. I used to get like 20-30 kb/s until last week, and now I get most of the time no download or a short download of a very slow speed of 1-2 kb/s

Which is weird! why does that happen if i didn't change any settings???

lil-thugz July 21st, 2005 02:12 AM

Well you must ask your ISP about this
and I think you have to do a portforwarding
and what program are you using for your p2p?
Does the file you are downloading have enough sources?
Check your firewall?
Check for spyware or viruses

Octavian July 21st, 2005 02:21 AM

I don't think there's a problem with the ISP 'cause I can download files from other sites.

I'm using LimeWire 4.8.1 pro.

I used to have kazalite resurection before it, it was slow (still is) and rarely downloads

when I downloaded Limewire, it was really fast, I longer had to wait days to download something simple, just minutes for songs and over night for video clips.

As for viruses, I have no virus scan, but I did check for adware and removed it, nothing changed.

Someone suggested that I change the ports, but I have no idea how to do that.

The thing is I'm more like surprised!!! How could this happen all of a sudden???

It's like you had electricity and just one moment it was off!!!

The 2 things are different. Some isp's use programs that specifically filter p2p sharing. This is one example: http://www.sandvine.com/products/p2p_element.asp
For those that have discovered that they're now blocked/filtered, they also find it happens "all of a sudden"!

A simple thing to try to make sure it's not LW's fault is to try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire

Otherwise, to try other ports: Go to Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewall & change the listening port to something else like 1203, 80, 20282, or 443. Need to press apply button after changing it. Then go to File>Connect or disconnect, wait a minute, then connect. Try each of the suggested port no.'s but allow LW at least 15+ mins to attempt to connect.

Octavian July 21st, 2005 11:21 AM

Alright, Kazaalite works fine, so I guess the ISP is alright

trying to change ports is not working for me

Could there be any kind of virus??

I did uninstall and install it, did no good

Octavian July 22nd, 2005 08:58 PM

Well I just repaired my O/S.
No I'm in doubt, how can I know it it's the ISP that slows the downloading.

joaquinn July 22nd, 2005 11:30 PM

um sometimes if ur having slow download speed it might have something to do with the person that you are trying to download off like if they uploaded the file movies or whateva they could be using dial up it does not matter if you are using broudband becuase im only getting 5kb/s at the min so u know it might have something to do with that person

HighLimitPro July 23rd, 2005 01:03 AM

Hi Lord,
I tried changing my port and its worked a gem... i'm connected at 4.2Mbps over ADSL and was only able to download at 1/2KB but now happily averaging 40/50KB..
Thanks again

lil-thugz July 23rd, 2005 01:10 AM

Hey you must make sure that you have enough sources (to do this you must see in limewire when downloading from how many hosts eg downloading from 7 hosts will be good speed)
and if you have a router just tell me the name of your router
If you want to know if your ISP limit the speed just go and ask them (call them or email them)
Do portforwarding if you have a router
SET Limewire To default setting To do this Go To:
Tools>Option
Click on Restore Default button

joaquinn July 23rd, 2005 01:21 AM

highlimitpro what do you mean you changed your port a lil help please

HighLimitPro July 23rd, 2005 01:47 AM

Hi Joaq,
I just did what exactly lord said to do,i think you said you tried it but to no avail...
Try going to Tools>Options>Advanced>firewall then change it from what should be 6346 to 443 or 1203 or 80.Remember to click apply then ok.
I disconnected first then made those changes then reconnected..worked for me..try it again and let me know
Regards John

Octavian July 23rd, 2005 02:04 AM

my router's speedtouch

I just still remember how fast it was downloading, then will I was downloading a file I was surprised when I saw it not finish

This p2p is a complicated thing

Octavian July 23rd, 2005 02:06 AM

Another strange thing

I'm disconnected yet it still tell me (downloading from five sources) or (1kb/s)
strange

joaquinn July 23rd, 2005 02:07 AM

hey i just changed it to 1203 or whateva im downloading 4 files because im trying to download 2 movies but they are spit up into 4 files but one is downloading at 21kb/s and the other one is still at 4 so it helped a bit but not much

joaquinn July 23rd, 2005 02:12 AM

oh and the one thats not downloading to fast is still downloading from 5 hosts so yea kinda odd

Lord of the Rings July 23rd, 2005 02:37 AM

Also keep in mind the p2p client programs that might be a part of your sources. Some, such as Shareaza (RAZA) use most of their upld bandwidth on a different network, thus getting 0.01 to 3 KB/s from them is not unusual. (If you wish to see the clients you're downldg from, right-click on the top of the columns & select Vendor. This will show an xtra column.)

Also sharing from multiple hosts, well some might just be offering a small amount each.

Remember, if you have search or browse results still up you can reselect the file to downld after stopping it. This sometimes re-invigours the downld. More hints & skills about downlding here (see all the off-shoot links): To continue files downlding (click on link)

As for isp's blocking or filtering speeds, well some are known to target specific programs. As you can see here: ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire

lilthugz July 23rd, 2005 05:05 AM

Hey Octavian
There are many Speedtouch routers so just tell me what model is it
Speedtouch 510 v4.0
Speedtouch 510 v4.2
Speedtouch 510 Alt
Speedtouch 530
Speedtouch 540
Speedtouch 545
Speedtouch 570 v1.0
Speedtouch 570 v2.0
Speedtouch 570 v4.2
Speedtouch 608
Speedtouch Firewall

It must be one of these ones above

Octavian July 23rd, 2005 07:55 AM

All what it says is alcatel speedtouch 510
does that help?

lilthugz July 23rd, 2005 05:50 PM

ok go to these links and they might help you
http://www.portforward.com/alcatel/st510.htm
http://www.portforward.com/alcatel/st510v42.htm
http://www.portforward.com/alcatel/st510alt.htm
and click on what program you want to portforward for example limewire and follow the instruction for your modem

If this didnt help then there is a problem with your ISP or your computer

Octavian July 24th, 2005 11:30 AM

but why lilthugz? I mean why do I need portforwarding now and I didn't need it back then? this is what I don't get

I called my ISP they told me nothing was wrong (of course I can choose to not believe them) and I don't remember doing anything to change the settings of my computer

Can a virus or something exist that slows down just p2p??

Lord of the Rings July 24th, 2005 12:04 PM

Octavian try downlding a magnet link from this site here: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml & tell us what speeds you get. If you wish to see potential speeds you can get from that site then see Stief’s example: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...692#post138692

Octavian July 24th, 2005 01:56 PM

hey lord,

I tried downloading, but nothing seems to move.

It just keeps looking for sources which I find strange, don't you think?

Lord of the Rings July 24th, 2005 02:08 PM

Definitely odd! That sounds not good! Ominous in fact! If not your isp then ... perhaps a connection device but hmm! This might not do anything but did you try deleting your LW Preferences folder whilst LW is closed; instructions here: Fixes for Limewire

It sounds more to me like your isp is using a p2p filter. Trying another client like Bearshare might be interesting.

Octavian July 25th, 2005 05:48 AM

Changing ports does funny stuff, for example, first I had it on port 1203 and 2 out of the 4 downloads were downloading

Then I changed it to 6364 and I got the other two downloading yet the other 2 stopped.
I think I'll have to go on and research p2p and networking

the magnet link is downloading slower than them all, like you said , lord, very odd!

As for getting bearshare, I bet it's better but I already have LW and bearshare costs money, but will think about it

Octavian July 25th, 2005 12:26 PM

Well, I now i'm nagging a lot, but i think if i keep on posting someone might bennifit from this exprience.

I just downloaded Ares, and it was FAST at least for some files it even reached 30 kb/s that's more than 10 times faster than what I had in limewire, the only drawback was that it reliable on very popular files, otherwise it doesn't act that good.

I tried port forwarding as lilthugz suggested, didn't do much although it was a good idea.

And what's weirder is that limewire tells me for example that I have 7 hosts downloading from, yet the speed doesn't exceed 2kb/s (sometimes even 0kb/s!!!)

So I think these are my options,

1- The ISP is messing with me and it's doing what it can to limit p2p, and it did discover limewire so it cut its speed and once it finds about the other p2ps it will do the same.
2- Something's wrong with Limewire
3- I have some sort of firewall I don't know about (because when I downloaded Ares it said that it detected a firewall-strange-I was sure no firewall existed)
4- Something other thing is wrong with my computer
5-Something else I have not taken into account.

ye God, this is a problem for the ages!!

bkbauer1955 July 26th, 2005 01:53 PM

downloads start high, go to zero

I checked out the forum, and cannot find a solution .. I have AND 64 Processor, Nvidia nforce3, XP, cable modem, and have configured to NOT use the XP FW, configured as instructed to add Gnutella access in Nvidia FW, tried different versions of LW.. anyone have a clue or pointer to get me started on fixing this .. I get 50kbs plus speeds on downloads and in 30 seconds they all go to ZERO .. but on my IBM TP, attached to the same cable modem and NW provider, it works perfect ?????
