help! What is a codec?

is it just me or is this whole thing hard to figure out? What is a codec and why every time I spend 4 hours downloading a movie all I get is the words and no picture? It keeps saying something about a codec.

whats the filetype? did you search the forum about codecs? if the file type is .avi you are probably in the need for a divx codec. download the divx player codec here: http://www.divx.com/divx/player/
