No Bitrate and odd file sizes

Within the last two weeks, my searches have produced many results that show no bitrates. When I try to download these I get a "Need More Sources," which aren't found.

I also get bizarre results that show 14 copies available for a song file sized 134.2, which can't be a playable audio file and sounds like buffer noise when downloaded.

I use LimeWire basic 4.9.30 and Windows XP home.

Any ideas?
Grazie mille

It probably means they're corrupt. See Downld/Upld Problems Sticky re: corrupt files.

But, some other gnutella clients such as Bearshare & others will sometimes have files that show no bit rate. I'm guessing b/c their hashing of this information is a little different & doesn't translate across properly to LW.

But I just checked my files within my iTunes arranging them by bitrate. And there were mixed results. I found most problems were with ogg files (I use a 3rd party plug-in to allow ogg playback.) Some played but some didn't. But when I checked them with a id3 tag program that supports ogg, the bit rates showed up fine. iTunes also thought these unrated bit rate files were something else as far as format goes. So check your player support the format & you have the appropriate plug in.

Further anomalies

Lord of the Rings, your reply was very helpful. Although I couldn't find the Sticky referenced in the upload/download forum, I read the messages on the odd file size problem which I assume continues as an intentional way to ruin other peoples' use of LW.

But these corruption problems do not only occur for fairly new releases. I have experienced them for Phil Ochs downloads from 1991.

Also I am getting listings of 15 downloads for a song and then the download takes forever to start, lasts for 2% of the song and then cuts out. I then get the "Need more sources" messages and no sources are found. I am currently experiencing this on "Ne Me Quittez Pas" by Jacques Brel.

Would LW Pro alleviate any of these problems?

I use a modem to download.

Thanks

134.2 etc

It is worth running a bitzi search on some of these file. I did one and I was informed the file was in fact an iPod advertisement, harmless on this occasion, but annoying and taking up space on the network. To perform Bitzi search, right click on any file on Limewire and selecting Bitzi look-up will open your browser and take you to a web page for the result, (which it can not always give as it does not have the information).

Remember that a single song audio file will be somewhere between 3 and 6 MB. These nasty little files are about 1/3rd of a Megabite which is the size of no audio file other than one that lasts about 20 seconds.

If you make a search for an old and relatively obscure song, I would be very dubious of a result that came up showing more than a VERY few identical files

Limewire Pro will nor prevent these problems. The problem is that if you type in, say "Abboy Road" which I did the other day by mistake, you will most likely get a result similar to the type you describe,(I did)... as these spammers have software which replicates the name of any search being made.

I recall not finding that song either and settled for Juliette Greco instead ... not impressed:(

If Limewire had size filters ...............

I hope this helps.
