Upload Limit Reached - 1000 file limit; keep increasing Uploads Per Person?
 

See my sig for specs on my computer, connection and Limewire version. :)

I am receiving "Upload Limit Reached" messages. I have set each user to upload 1000 files (I realize this is an expected message when a user reaches the Upload Limit).

In the past (before upgrading several times, and on a really old version; probably back in 2002), when I wanted to give users a chance to download more files, I would restart Limewire. This would reset the "Upload" for each person to zero, so that those who had previously receivd an Upload Limit Reached message would now be able to upload more files.

However, on newer versions of Limewire this does not work. How can I allow people who are getting Upload Limit Reached messages to upload more files? (a) Restarting Limewire doesn't work. (b) I could just keep increasing the "Uploads Per Person" file allowance, but is there another way?

I increased Uploads Per Person from 10 to 100 and now 1000. :p

Erm .... The upload limits you set on yor Limewire preferences are for simultaneous uploads. For instance if you set it to 20 uploads and 3 uploads per person, this means that only 20 people can upload at once, and only 3 can go to any one host at a time. Once one upload has finished another one can start to the same host.

If the host queues more than 3 uploads. The others will be labelled "upload limit reached" At times the potential uploader will have a file marked "banned greedy Servent" and this is an automatic message ... and I'm not absolutely sure what triggers it. This will be removed next session. It is not a permanent ban on the host.

Only set your upload limit to anumber your system can handle... 1000 will not help!

I thought there was a difference between Limewire/Preferences/Options/Uploads/Max Upload Slots (mine is set to 8)

and

Limewire/Preferences/Options/Uploads/Uploads Per Person (mine is set to 1000).

I can certainly understand how one could not set their Max Upload Slots to 1000 :p :D but it seems like it would be okay to set Uploads Per Person to 1000.

By "simultaneous uploads" I assume you are referring to Max Upload Slots. Mine is set to 8, and is usually set to 6. Never more than 8.

I did not realize that "Max Upload Slots" (of 8 or 6) with hosts that queued more than 3 uploads (in the queue) triggered an Upload Limit Reached message. I somehow thought that was triggered by the Uploads Per Person setting. If it is triggered by Max Upload Slots, I won't worry about it. I hope I have it right; if not I look forward to clarification.

I have a slowish dsl connection. I usually set my slots to 5 and my slots per person to 1 so if a host has an upload running and tries to make a second one, it will say Upload limit reached, (as wil susequent attempts with other files). This will start a minute or so after the first upload has finished. If I have 5 different uploads running and a 6th host tries to upload he will be "queued at 1" (I'm not sure how many can queue)

So ... the Upload limit reached is trigerred by the uploads per person setting, but is not permanent. The file will upload in due course.

To set your uploads per person higher than your max upload slots would be meaningless.

This is a continuation of this thread, and also picks up on a discussion we were having here :)

In the past, in older versions of Limewire, here is what would happen if I set Limewire/Preferences/Options/Uploads/Uploads Per Person to 1:

(a) It would initially allow someone to download one file, let's say a music file. Then they would finish that upload.

(b) Thereafter when the same person tried to upload a second file, even if they were only in one slot, it would continually give them an Upload Limit Reached error.

That is what prompted me to change my settings Limewire/Preferences/Options/Uploads/Uploads Per Person so that people had 1,000 uploads. Perhaps the old and new versions of Limewire are different.

According to the Limewire User Guide here on Page 21 of the downloadable version, the guide defines "Slots: Uploads Per Person" as "limits the number of files a single host can download from your computer." This bears out my reasoning for setting this value to 1,000 above. Since doing that, if someone wants to download 1,000 songs from me they can; as long as they are only using one Upload Slot at a time. :)

"Slots: Uploads Per Person" above for those who are looking for it is the same as Limewire/Preferences/Options/Uploads/Uploads Per Person.

On page 21, the User Guide also defintes "Max Upload Slots" as: "Limits the maximum number of simultaneous uploads that are allowed. The default number is set to five. Set this number to zero to stop uploads." (Let's not encourage that last practice as, that deserves a whole new topic so people understand that the downloads and uploads are like the north and south lanes of a busy highway and do not interfere with each other.)

The second one is the only one that refers to simultaneous uploads.

"Max Upload Slots" for those who are looking for it is in Options under Limewire/Preferences/Options/Uploads/Max Upload Slots which I have set to 10. So, depending on bandwidth, I may have up to 10 different IP addresses uploading at once.**

I have been observing Limewire this week because I was curious about what you wrote and indeed as you stated it has given "Upload Limit Reached" errors to the same IP address if they were trying to upload two files simultaneously using two of my precious upload slots. So perhaps it is a blend of what you are saying and what I am saying, and perhaps the User Guide doesn't quite have it sorted yet. :)

** Footnote from above: Except for that one crazy instance where one individual had hogged four of my Upload Slots and had several of my Queue slots! Other than that, it has worked beautifully; letting each IP address have only one Upload Slot at a time. :)

Hi Hobo .. I'm new on here, so I really appreciate all u have to say. Usually when I'm going to be away from my puter for a while and always before I go to bed I up the slots to 100 and give all the ram (1GB). Hope this helps others who are downloading from me.
