Default unknown firewall?

i am using windows xp from my apartment and my downloads are slowwwww. i have a broadband connection but am only logging a top speed of 7kb/s. i thought the windows xp (sp2) firewall could be partially blocking my downloads so i disabled it. however, limewire still shows that i have a firewall and my dl speed hasnt changed. help? i have sophos antivirus and that doesn't even have an independent firewall so idk what could possibly be blocking it.

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. Do this test: Bug Report instructions & sample image Is the result True/False?
2. What firewalls you have?
3. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
4. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
5. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
6. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
7. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.

* See Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link) to get tips on setting up firewall for LW's acess, & also for enabling UPnP for your modem/router, else manual port forwarding.

the test worked

this whole slow download thing is not a new problem. i lived in the dorms last year and had limewire installed for a little while before i finally gave up and uninstalled lw for the same reason (too slow). i've used other p2p sharing programs (but not currently) and they've worked fine.

I've heard of similar situations before. People living in apartments with shared internet connection & no access to the actual connection device. I presume there's some type of bandwidth limit, so the landlord my deliberately keep a control of things by shaping p2p network. Just a guess.
I've also heard of complaints against Charter before also, however nothing definitive.

Try BearShare Lite & see if you have the same problems: http://www.filehippo.com/download_bearshare_lite/

The issue here is you have no control over your issues. If it's the router issue (& highly possibly is), then you can't do anything about it except talk to the landlord about it.
