The word is MPeg 4 types are going to be used for DVD for the HD-DVD or Blu-ray Disc format dvd's instead of MPeg 2. I believe the fore-runner for this is H.264 format. Not DivX format which is a highly protected/copyright/patent format. DivX format is not as advanced in abilities as H.264 format potential. More about H.264 format here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264
More about MPeg 4 formats here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPEG_4
More about DivX here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divx

AVI can be almost any format. It can be divx or xvid, Cinepak, Indeo video, Matroska, etc. AVI is just the outer shell if you like. QuickTime is also very similar. A QT file could be any no. of formats.

Some of the newer dvd players can now play mpeg4/divx. Mine can & it's very handy just burning a data dvd to play the files rather than converting to mpeg 2. So much more can fit on. A 700 MB mpeg 4 file might have 2 hrs of video. Multiply that by 6 to fit onto a 4.37 GB dvd & that's a lot of video.

BTW help with finding mpeg files, see Cant search well help

yes i downlaoded a few movies from limeiwre and i just put them staright on a blank dvd disk and i guess it turned into a data cd but it worked fine on my dvd player, i had about 4 movies on a disk which were all about 70mb each, does this mean my dvd player can play mpeg4??

i imported my dd player from a different country for only a tenenr and i think now that it can play everything

My dvd player is only a cheap player & can play more than many 3 or 4 times the price. It cost me $109 AUD which is equivalent to $81 US or 46.2 British Pound.

You say 70 MB. Are you sure they were 70 MB or 700 MB? If they were 700 MB then perhaps you did just burn as data dvd & your player played them as mpeg4/divx videos. If they were 70 MB then I don't know. It could have been either. After all, 4 x 70 MB is only 280 MB which is about one 15th of what can fit onto a dvd. If these were only short videos then if they were converted to mpeg 2 video for a proper dvd-video disk then they would be able to fit also.

yeah sorry i meant 700mb! (spelling error)

then there is no ponit in burning and converting and wasting your days copying dvds etc init, just donwload about 5 or 6 full movies from limewire and put them onto a blank disc and then your laughin basaically.

i would recommened every1 get a dvd player hat plays divx/mpeg init?

cool, i jsut found out that my dvd player plays divx by luck and i read the box properly and i can play nearly everythnig (VCD, SVCD, DIVX HDCD, DTS) im so happy,

thanks

althoguh i dont know what DTS and HDCD are!

Lord of the Rings March 5th, 2006 08:02 AM

HDCD -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCD

DTS -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Theatre_System

DTS is similar to AC3 dolby surround sound, but patented & arguably even better.
