My immediate thoughts are your ISP (internet service provider) is shaping p2p sharing bandwidth. They can detect it using special programs which can also limit their bandwidth. I believe that's what's happening with you. Who is your isp?

Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface? (see sample attached image below by clicking it!)

Try an experiment, try downlding a magnet link & tell us what happens ... such as what speeds it gets, how well it connects, etc. Go here & choose a file: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml

oh, there is a firewall, but even when i get rid of it it is still really slow

Oh Oh ... !!! They only apply it to p2p sharing programs. Apparently if you use p2p during off-peak hours then it's not so bad! ;) Check the links here under the listing for TalkTalk in the 1st post at the top of the page: ISP's known to BLOCK or Filter p2p or specifically Limewire

You shouldn't turn your firewall off!!! What you do is configure it to allow LimeWire full access but not allow anything else ... intructions here (advisable not to have 2 active firewalls b/c they can interfere with each other); Firewall configuration instructions (click on link)

thanks, thats probably it, i guess, though i am less than certain, because this morning it wasn't working well either. It is difficult to get on in the morning, so is it possible for file sharing without using p2p

p2p is file-sharing. Check the links I left to find out the best times to use it. ;)
