I normally like to download .avi's because that's the type of format that I like over the others.:)

You will also need to convert the files into dvd format to be able to veiw them on your dvd player...;)
You also need a dvd burner

The Nero DVD burner converts .avi's, mpeg, etc automatically when you burn it onto a DVD. That's why I like Nero for burning DVD's because it's all in one.;)

I'm not sure about Nero ... it's probably the same, but I do remember with Roxio that it has limitations with mpeg files. You cannot do something with them that you can with avi files. I just can't remember what that is. It might be you can't edit the sections you want to burn with mpeg ... You can only use the total that's there. Perhaps I'm wrong but I do know avi has some flexibility that mpeg doesn't but only in the preparation stage of the Roxio setting up before burning.

Not forgetting DVD actually uses mpeg 2 format but is Muxed during the conversion stage if the original file is mpeg2 with separations & info files created.

Well, Nero StartSmart can convert .avi's and mpegs into DVD format because my sister and I have burnt these types of formats onto disc's before. We tried to put one of the videos that we had burnt back onto the harddrive so we could use it in Windows Movie Maker and we couldn't because it was in DVD format.
