what does "disk problem" mean?

i've been having this problem when i'm downloading video files. it does the whole download thing just like you would think it would when you would download any file. but after its done it goes through the verification part in like a second and says "Disk Problem". a little window pops up and says that the file may be being used by another program. when i select the file in the download list and hit the explore button, it takes me to the incomplete folder and when i look at the properties of the file it says that it's size is 0 bytes.

so what do i do? why does this happen?

The "disk problem" is a hairy one. Here are a few threads, there doesn't seem to be one nice, clean answer. Some people have had success after defragmenting the HDD.

And also this, which may be of absolutely no use at all but deals with files not verifying
