Port Forwarding

In the port forwarding page for Limewire, it says that you can use any port between 10,000 and 60,000 does that actually meany ANY port(35000, for example) or is there a list to choose from?

EDIT: Also, how do I know what to type in the address bar? I typed in the number on the port forward page, but that doesn't work :(

birdy July 3rd, 2006 09:54 PM

There's a good range of ports to use here
Alternative Ports

Have you been using this site for port forwarding?
http://www.portforward.com/
If your router's listed there, you'll find step by step instructions. Could you explain your problem a bit more?

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 09:59 PM

Yes, that is the site that I am using. I'll check that link...

EDIT: Also, I checked the default port with someone's signature and it worked.

birdy July 3rd, 2006 10:03 PM

The default port for LW's 6346, you could just use that unless you're concerned that your ISP is traffic shaping or blocking p2p through some ports.

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 10:08 PM

I have no problem downloading; I can get speeds over 100kbs, but I can't direct connect.

EDIT: Actually, I USED TO get speeds over 100 kbps, but since I've started trying to fix this firewall thing, I've only got around 30. but I probably just got slow hosts...

birdy July 3rd, 2006 10:14 PM

Well I'd say you'd be ok using port 6346 then, if you want to. Have you made sure that your software firewall's configured?
Firewall setup

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 10:18 PM

Yes, I am using the Windows firewall now, but I still see a few McAfee processes lurking in the list. It's the crappy AOL version of McAfee, by the way.

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 10:29 PM

WOW! I have no idead how, but the brickwall is gone! yay! I geuss I'll experiment a little to see what killed it...

birdy July 3rd, 2006 10:31 PM

Sometimes it takes a little while (half hour or so) for the firewall icon to go away after making any changes.
:D

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 10:34 PM

Well, the wall is dead, but it still says that I am behind a router/firewall. and it still fails to connet to people. Why is this happening?

birdy July 3rd, 2006 10:50 PM

When you say the wall is dead do you mean that the icon is gone?

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 10:51 PM

Yes, but the little message in the direct connect tab is still there.

birdy July 3rd, 2006 10:55 PM

What's your modem/router brand & model? If your router supports UPnP, try enabling it & checking it within LW's tools > options > advanced > firewall config.
Really, if the firewall icon isn't showing I'd have thought you'd have no prob with direct connect. Tools > options > bug reports > view example. Scroll down to 'recieved incoming this session'... is it true or false?

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 10:57 PM

The modem is Westell Versalink 327W.

birdy July 3rd, 2006 11:01 PM

Ok it supports UPnP, try enabling it. Also look at the bug report as in my last post (late edit, sorry).

wioneo July 3rd, 2006 11:12 PM

It is true, and I eneabled it...

birdy July 3rd, 2006 11:22 PM

If the bug report's true then you shouldn't have a firewall problem... means that you can accept incoming connections. I don't know why direct connect's not doing it! Have you tried restarting LW? You could delete your preferences folder (when LW's closed), that seems to fix some weird problems. Points 2 & 3 here
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill your settings within tools > options, you'll have to re set everything afterwards. Give LW a while to settle down & see what happens.

I really don't see why you would need to port forward but try it if you like! You should be right using port 6346. Just remember to set up a static IP address first.

wioneo July 4th, 2006 12:02 AM

I erased the preferences, and the brick wall came back :(

EDIT: Also, the bug report thing is false...

birdy July 4th, 2006 12:15 AM

You're going to make me cry. Make sure again that your firewall is set up right. Did you go into options & select UPnP again? Make sure that the listening port number is still the same as originally (because that's the port number you've allowed through your firewall). If you find that the port number's changed, change it back & give LW time to settle again.
It might be time to try port forwarding:(
I don't know what's going on with your set up or why this is happening.

wioneo July 4th, 2006 12:43 AM

Well, I changed the port and after a little while, the wall went away again! and the thing is true. but I still get the you cannot direct connect thing...

birdy July 4th, 2006 12:48 AM

What exactly does the d/c message say? Do you see your IP address when you click on the d/c tab?

birdy July 4th, 2006 12:49 AM

Have you enabled chat????? Tools > options > chat. Tick 'enable chat' & apply.
I can't believe I didn't ask you that before:o:o

wioneo July 4th, 2006 01:02 AM

I have chat enabled, and the message says "Your computer is behind a firewall or router and cannot receive direct connections." It doesn't show an IP.

birdy July 4th, 2006 01:14 AM

Well I think it's time to try port forwarding then. Follow the directions here & you should be right, just don't forget that static IP address set up first!
http://www.portforward.com/english/r...W/Limewire.htm

Let us know if you run into problems:)

wioneo July 4th, 2006 01:16 AM

Well the first time that I tried port forwarding the configuration IP address didn't work. maybe that's part of the static thing... That means motionless, doesn't it?

EDIT: I can't find the static IP page...
EDIT:: I found a forum post...

birdy July 4th, 2006 01:30 AM

Ok it would seem that you don't have to set up a static IP for your device!! For most modems & routers you do but if it's not on the portforward page then just follow their instructions! Forget the static IP I guess.

That default address lets me log into my router... are you sure you're typing it into the top text field in your browser?

birdy July 4th, 2006 01:38 AM

I've checked with another site, that default address is right. When you type it into your browser it should pop up a box asking you for username (admin) & password (password).

wioneo July 4th, 2006 01:46 AM

I copied "192.168.1.1" into the address bar, and I get a "This page cannot be displayed" page.
The title says invalid syntax error...

birdy July 4th, 2006 01:56 AM

I really don't know why! Maybe you need to go to Westell's customer support & tell them what's happening!
http://www.westell.com/pages/support...edcfkcfkcfin.0

Sorry but I seriously don't have a clue.

wioneo July 4th, 2006 01:57 AM

I geuss I'll try customer support when some people are actually awake. For now, I am googling for other people with this problem. Thank you for all your hlp :)

EDIT: I looked in their manual, and it said to type either "http://dslrouter or http://192.168.1.1." I typed in "http://dslrouter" and it worked! I haven't been on the configuration screen in a long time, so I'm not sure if it is the right screen, but at least it's someting.

EDIT:: I am pretty sure that this was the screen that I saw in the past, but it is different than the port forwarding one. This extremely disappointing :(

birdy July 4th, 2006 02:47 AM

Just have a look through the screen & see if there are options that might take you to the right router page... you do deserve some luck with all this. I'll try & find some help for you;)

Lord of the Rings July 4th, 2006 03:09 AM

I'm not sure about Westell's UPnP reliability. But to log into the device, there's 2 options: http://192.168.1.1 OR http://dslrouter

http://www.westell.com/content/sales/327W.pdf (page 17 has setting up account info.)

wioneo July 4th, 2006 03:48 AM

I already looked through the pages. but I couldn't find anything similar. I am really tired and will check later on today...

Also, I sent them the screen grabber thing. Maybe they will update their guide :)

wioneo July 8th, 2006 08:23 PM

Well, my family has been on vacation, and I haven't checked this for a few days...

wioneo July 9th, 2006 12:05 PM

Thanks for all of the help guys! After I port forwarded, the direct connect text changed to my IP address and other stuff. I think that this means it works now. I'll test it...

wioneo July 22nd, 2006 10:50 PM

Something is wrong! It suddenly stopped working! the brick wall came back, I can't direct connect, and the "received incoming this session" is false! The power went out for about 20 seconds, yesterday. Cold this be the cause? I checked the router configuration, and it is the same. I check the windows firewall options, and the ports were wrong, but the were wrong before and it still worked. i set them correctly and I'm hoping that that will fix this, but I don't see any reason why it would...

This is very strange, it has gone away now, and I can make direct connections. I am going to have to tweak some things to see what caused this...
