Red face Video/Movie viewing Issue!

Hi everyone.

Unusual problem I guess, but when I download a movie from Limewire (and its only recently started to do this), when I play back (no matter what player I use on my pc), the picture is covered with dots and arrows shooting or darting all over the place - If that makes any sense?? This is maddening now because it distorts the picture obviously, and I have no idea what could be causing it to do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Sincerest regards
Terry

I wonder if it's related to graphic card settings. Try setting them back to default to see if that makes a difference.

Also, have you tried VLC - (click on link) _ (choose nearest mirror site) which has in-built codecs & is generally very reliable.

Thumbs up Thanks Lord Of The Rings:-)

Hi there Lord.... thanks for your speedy reply and no, I havent thried the codecs that you have recommended but will be looking at that shortly. I did upgrade my windows media player from version 9 to version 11 (only since then the problems started really) now have rolled it back to version 9 again, but makes no difference to the avi downloads (even affected downloads that were not affected before too).

Im using Windows XP, so would you know where I would find the graphics card settings page, would it be in the control panel do you think? Sorry for being a nuisance over this issue!

Thanks again
Terry

Hi Lord:

I am having somewhat of a problem with my Windows Media Player. When I tried to preview the downloading movie or even after full download, I get a message that reads: Windows Media player cannot play this file. It is missing one or two codecs: What does that mean? Also, I tried selecting Limewire Media Player to be default player by checking the little box, but still doesn't work. Thank you for your reply.

It means that WMP is missing some information that it needs to be able to play those file types. You'll find links to codec packs below & also a link to VLC player which has built in codecs & can play most things
Codecs & VLC
(the XP codec pack is good for WMP)

Open your saved folder (outside of LW), right click on a file > open with > choose program > choose WMP. Tick 'always use the selected program to open this kind of file' > OK.
That should make WMP your default player!

Guys

I am not sure if the following is true but anecdotal evidence seems to point to MS messing with your codec whenever you upgrade WMP.

I seem to remember that when I last updated my WMP I lost the ability to play some film clips I could play before, a work colleague of mine said at the time that this was typical of MS, secretly deleting facilities while doing an update.

What I do know for certain was that I had to go hunting for the codecs I had mysteriously lost.
