Download feature does not work

I'm frustrated, and may go away from Limewire altogether! Up until about 2 weeks ago (before downloading the new version), I was able to download songs OK. Now I can only do searches. The download function simply does not work anymore. Why? How can I correct this?

HELP!!

Try posting more specific info on setup first. Please try to answer all the questions.

Just copy/paste this into a reply with your answers

1. What's your connection like - do you have any green bars at all?
Is there a brick wall in front of world ?

2. Do this test & see if it works. What does it say ?
http://www3.limewire.com:6346

3. What are your details

OS ? (Win XP, Mac OSX etc.)
How much free harddiskspace ?
How much RAM ?
LW & Java version ? (In Limewire press Help>about LW & you'll see)
What Firewall you're using ?
Any Antivirus/spyware programs that youre using ?
Modem/router brand & model ?
Are you using portforwarding, UPnP or nothing ? (Tools>Options>Advanced>Firewall Config)
What is your listening port ? (Same as above)
ISP (Internet Service Provider) ?
Connection type (Dial-Up, ADSL, DSL etc.) + Speed Up/Down if you know ?
Where you connect from (home, school etc.) ?
Are you sharing a connection with other computers ?
Has Limewire ever worked for you ? If so how long have you been using it ?

Have you tried using any other P2P apps & if so, do you have the same problems (BitTorrent, Shareaza etc.)?

Give a detailed description of your problem. Also include any attempts to fix this. It helps people rule things out

Also, make sure that it's not a simple license issue. Click on the link below & follow the directions... see if that makes any difference ;)

You only say that the download feature doesn't work. Please explain

If nothing at all happens, then it's probably the licence issue that Birdy posted the link for. If not then please clarify

rastaman1 August 21st, 2006 07:00 PM

I can see all the songs by the artist that I choose, but when I double click to download nothing happens. It just says "connecting" or "Queued" or "Need more sources". PERIOD!!!

Sleepless August 21st, 2006 07:19 PM

How to find music :)

Try the advice there

Sounds to me like you're clicking on fake files & the end result is nothing. LW will never connect to fake files!

See these links for some descriptions as to what's been happening to the gnutella network: (1) Overpeers, (2) MediaSentry,
(3) Mediadefender, & finally (4) what is happening to Limewire ?

Also, you have a firewall problem. Have you ever thought about correcting it? It's either due to your software firewall or else your modem/router's internal NAT firewall. Each of the following sections deal with these issues of firewalls: Connection problems? Check here first! (click on link)

Thanks for all your well-intentioned help. However, it would have to be explained to me why these things would be valid possibilities, as I have not changed ANYTHING about what I have been doing with Limewire. The ONLY thing new is that I have downloaded the newest version -- 4.12.6. What a bummer!!

Lord of the Rings August 21st, 2006 08:09 PM

What was your previous version?

ukbobboy01 August 22nd, 2006 05:26 AM

Hey Brother Rastaman1

You have to reconfigure your Norton firewall so that it lets your new version of LW through to the internet.

If you can't do the reconfiguring then follow these instructions:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=bar_sch_nam

Let us know how you get on.

I am having the same problem as above, I looked at the post where the questions were asked and the different steps to try. When I do step number 2 it says can not find server. What does this me and what do i need to do to fix it? Limewire worked for a year but I needed to recover my pc and now it does not work. Thanx in advance

ukbobboy01 August 22nd, 2006 11:08 AM

Demonicz

You will have to explain yourself a bit better, you are not clear on your particular problem and what you have tried to solve it.

Also, you have to let us know what equipment you are using as well as the version of LW and Java.

When I try to download a file it just sticks never starts downloading. I am using 4.12.6 LW and 1.5 Java. My system settings are matched to rastas or higher. I had Nortan installed and I unistalled it. I have no router nothing but constant connection. I am using UPnP and my port is 51265. Anything else u need? Thanx again for the help.

I have tried a lot of songs all the same things, connecting then looking for more sources. I do not have a wall in front of globe and all bars are green.

ukbobboy01 August 22nd, 2006 11:18 AM

Constant connection? Are you on a college, office or any other type of network?

Demonicz August 22nd, 2006 11:24 AM

Constant connection at home through local DSL provider

ukbobboy01 August 22nd, 2006 11:35 AM

Demonicz

Do you know if your ISP has introduced anti-P2P technology onto the network, because traffic shaping (as they call it) is becoming very popular amonst ISPs both sides of the Atlantic.

Therefore, I suggest you give them a call, make sure that you speak to a technician, and ask if they have added "traffic curbing/shaping" techniques onto the network.

That's the only way you will know.

UK Bob

I am presuming that you have not added any new software or hardware to your equipment and that it is working within it's specifications.

coleenzkie August 23rd, 2006 12:28 AM

i have the same problem also.. i have the latest limewire and latest java.. i am connected and have lots of disk space.. although, i can do searches but when i try ro click download to whatever song, it just wouldn't start.. i was able to dl some skins but that was it.. no songs or anything else. and it's not the license thing also.. help...

coleenzkie August 23rd, 2006 12:33 AM

btw,, i tried the license thingie,, and yes, the song will supposedly download but it never changes it status.. its always connecting...

birdy August 23rd, 2006 12:38 AM

After it sits 'connecting' for ages, does it go straight to 'need more sources'?

Sounds like you're trying to download fake files. These things are all over the place lately & won't ever connect.
Search again. Vary your search terms - look for artist or album rather than song title. Try the All Types search. Stay away from files with huge numbers of sources, I go for files with 10 sources or less;)

coleenzkie August 23rd, 2006 05:48 AM

birdy.. thank you so much much.. luvee...

playa787 August 23rd, 2006 11:03 AM

Same problem

Hey guys same thing is happening to me,I use to be able to download just fine but now,I'm getting the same problem,I can download some songs, but most I can't,even when there's a crazy amount of people who have it.I kinda noticed that these songs are pretty popular songs, mostly songs on i-tunes(if that has anything to do with it). Also there seems to be a lot of people in other threads having this problem with this latest version.I honestly think is a bug,and I'm on a mac.

StephenMSmith August 23rd, 2006 04:54 PM

It is fake files, but these are some type of new ones that just showed up recently. They show up at the top of the list when sorted by # of sources and have legitimate file sizes too. But you can identify them by adding the bitrate column to Limewire -- these files have no bitrate info while the legit files do. See attachment -- the fake file is the one marked as downloading...

wondering why August 23rd, 2006 05:08 PM

Good info StephenMSmith, I never noticed the absence of the Bitrate before...Cheers...;)

Help!!!

ok so i read all of this and did what the people said. but nothing worked. I click on a song to download and it sits there connecting and then it will go to need more sources. i have the latest version of limewire. i also have a brick wall in front of my world thing. I have all green bars. and i have a constant connection with my local DSL. There are multiple users on this computer and it works for the other users except me. so can someone please instruct me as to what i need to do?
Thanks much!!!

playa787 August 23rd, 2006 08:26 PM

no good

Thanks for the tip but still ain't working, allthe files I'm trying to download and don't work have bitrate. So I still think it's a bug

rastaman1 August 25th, 2006 01:39 PM

4.12.3, I think.

Sleepless August 25th, 2006 01:53 PM

Rastaman1

Don't know why you jump threads to say that your Norton keeps popping up instead of posting it here ??

That means that you haven't reconfigured it correctly and may also be part of your downloading problem

UKBobby gave detailed explainations on how to do this

Did you remove all previous exceptions before doing this (You should have)

rastaman1 August 25th, 2006 02:14 PM

Thanks for your reply. I'll try UKBobby's proposed solution.
