Newbie/Slightly Dozy PC User Help - Download Speed Slow!?

Guys/Gals hi,

Was hoping someone could give me some help and/or pointers on a download speed issue I'm having with Limewire (I've checked all the FAQ etc already by the way).

I recently updated from 4.10 to 4.12. This was about the same time as I moved house and we had all sorts of problems getting the Broadband account shifted/reconnected.

Anyways, with 4.10 I was getting speeds of around 50-80kb/s for songs and roughly 25-50kb/s for movies (all legit of course). Clearly that's a pretty crappy speed at any rate but I live in Thailand where "Broadband" means 'Broadband' :(

Initially I put it down to the problems we had in getting the whole set-up moved. However I've been monitoring the adslthailand.com site and checking connection speed (I'm on a 512/1012 up/down package) and that has been consistently showing around the 850kbps mark - the same as it was before we moved. Now however - even with the 'newer and faster' Limewire - I'm getting between 1-3kb/s even for a song!?! There's no missed digit in there, that's 1 to 3kb/s

So any ideas? My PC is pretty average spec but is also new (this is where the clueless PC user part comes in) and the only other thing that has been changed is the router/modem - this was a wireless set-up at first but when we moved they claimed to be out-of-stock (old one was left at old house) and they gave us a 'temporary' replacement standard type broadband router for the time being.

Would appreciate any help/tips/info/pointers anyone can give. Cheers.

Ps

Oh, and I've just waited 1hr to download 1 song and what do you know... the file is corrupt or something. Doesn't play correctly and keeps skipping.

Fantastic! :bangh:

First of all, I have to understand what you mean by the following:

You see, I am stunned because what you call "crappy speed", i.e. 25 - 80kps, is what we call very good or brilliant.

Secondly, what do you mean when you say:
Quote:

I live in Thailand where "Broadband" means 'Broadband'
Sorry, I just don't get this.

Anyway, I think the clue to your problem is the following:

I think your temporary modem/router has not been set up correctly and I bet that when you run LW you can see the brick wall in front of the globe, which indicates that LW can see the modem/router's built in firewall.

If I am correct then you will have to perform Port Forwarding on your modem/router and LW.

Therefore, go to this link: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showth...threadid=51357

Hope this helps

UK Bob,

Thanks so much for the pointers, unfortunately I am at work now but I will try your suggestions when I get home tonight - I was beginning to suspect that the issue was more with the modem/router than anything else. All my other Internet connections/speeds seem fine.

You are correct when you mention the "brickwall in front of the globe". However I'm fairly sure that was there on my old set-up also? Dunno really, could just be imagining it now.

Really!? Wow, I had no idea! Suppose I should stop moaning about that then! I honestly thought that it was a very average download speed - this is where the 'Slightly Dozy PC User' part of the message title applies ;)

And apologies for the confusion - what I meant by "Broadband" here in Thailand meaning 'Broadband' was just my little jibe at the service levels here. When I first subscribed I was getting speeds slower than a dial-up modem and it took several months for me to convince the service centre there was something wrong and then another month for them to actually do something about it (all the while paying full price for 'Broadband' of course). And not too mention the intermittent service itself (always up and down and the standard response being: 'We're working on it')

Anyways, thanks again and sorry for the ramble/moan. I'll try sorting the modem and let you know if I get any improvement.

Cheers,

Ant
