Default Incredibly Slow Downloads...

Prior to posting this thread, I have searched through the forums trying to find some answers. I did the whole "maximizing dowloads" thing and I am still having insanely slow downloads. I even tried to do some tweaking on my own. I turned off my firewire, did a test of my connection speed, and I even reinstalled LimeWire. I don't know if any of that would make any changes, but I tried it, and still nothing.

Something's telling me perhaps there's some bugs with the new version. My best bet now is to just revert to the old version. However, I don't have the old program files. Is there still some way I can access the old version?

Otherwise, here's my computer info:

OS: Windows XP (SP2)
LW Version: 4.12.6
Java: 1.5.0_08
Computer: Compaq
Speed: T1

I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer me.

Thank you very much!

Depends what old version you had
The LW site doesn't have old versions for download. Since the update, are you fully connected? Do you see the firewall icon (brick wall)? If you do see it, was it showing with the previous version?

What are your details (forgive the repeat questions!)

OS(Win XP etc)
LW & Java version (help > about LW & you'll see)
Firewall you're using
Modem/router brand & model
ISP
Connection type (DSL etc)
Where you connect from (home, school, student accommodation etc)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers
Is this your first try with LW

How did you have your router set up for the previous version (port forwarding, UPnP enabled or neither)?

Since the update I am fully connected. I see the firewall icon and yes, it was showing in the previous version.

Here are the details...

OS: Windows XP (SP2)
LW Version: 4.12.6
Java Version: 1.5.0_08
Firewall you're using: I'm not sure of the name, but it's the windows firewall I got from the SP2 download
Modem/router brand & model: Hmm, not sure how to answer this. I use an Ethernet cable though.
ISP: AT&T
Connection type: T1
Where you connect from: School (my dorm)
Are you sharing a connection with other computers: Yes
Is this your first try with LW: No. I was using the previous version for over a year

How did you have your router set up for the previous version (port forwarding, UPnP enabled or neither)?

I don't know much about that. If there was a default setting for those, I never changed them.

Ah ... a dorm ... they often have problems with speeds btw.

You might be interested in this for SP2 MS & 3rd party patches

As an experiment, choose a magnet link from this link & tell us what speeds you get: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml

Choose nearest location for a speed test & only have your browser open: http://www.t1shopper.com/tools/speedtest/ Tell us what speeds you get.

Here's an example of how a p2p bandwidth shaper can work against Gnutella: Bandwidth Shaper Sample - typical of how some schools & ISP's use it (click on link) ie: giving priority to net surfing & low priorities to p2p sharing.

First off, thanks to everyone for the advice and assistance. I really appreciate it.

LOTR, I actually have that patch installed already. It was part of a bulk download I did last year.

When downloading the video, I got the same slow speeds. It was about 1Kb per second.

For the speed test, my area wasn't available. I did it with the next closest area and got these results:

running 10s outbound test (upload) . . . . . 7.05Mb/s
running 10s inbound test (download) . . . . . . 6.27Mb/s

Your speed is 114.15 times faster than 56Kb dialup

Lastly, I read the last link. Ha, my friend actually goes to IWU. But anyway, you're right about the dorm situation. I didn't really know about sharing networks until I got here. I noticed that I was getting other people's playlists in my iTunes program. I'm guessing since so many people are on the network, it tends to stall and slow connection speed.

Anything you can tell me from this information?

Thanks!
