I recently switched to cable modem ...download way too slow ...

We recently moved to a new apartment and got cable internet conection from the local cable company, the modem is a motorola type (if it has anything to do with the problem) all my usual internet connection and web sites navigate ok including those used for downloading, except for Limewire, I've tried the help section for limewire for instructions on firewall settings, gnutella and zone alarm, all seem to be in good order, I can connect to the limewire network, do searches normally, the problem is when I attempt to download, it seems there is an overall problem with the communicationg between my modem and anyone elses ... the only one or two things I was able to download took hours if not an entire day, and we're talking of nothing more than 3 or 4 megs ...

Any suggestions ...?

Thanks ...

Can you give us a total description of your set up:
1. OS version? (eg: Windows 98)
2. What firewalls you have?
3. How much ram?
4. Hard Disk space available?
5. Connection type? (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.)
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (home, school, work, etc.)?
8. What version of Limewire (LW) & Java do you have? (Go to LW's menu Help>About LW...) Will show both LW & Java version.
9. Who is your isp provider (Internet Service Provider)?
10. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
11. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
12. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
13. Try and download a magnet file from here and see what speed you get for it, then post the result as well:http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml

i know this isnt my thread, but I'm having the exact same problem. I'm in college and have my computer hooked up to their cable internet. Limewire worked just fine for awhile, but recently started taking way too long to connect to the network. I had to wait at least 15 minutes before I could even begin to search for songs. Once I chose a song, it took hours for it to download. I uninstalled and reinstalled Limewire, which took care of the slow connection problem, but still cant get my speedy downloads back. I clicked on the link for the test you posted and got the "your test worked" message, and also started a download of one of those magnet files...which currently is downloading at 1 KB/s and will take about 10 hours.

i have an HP pavilion dv 1000. I had cable internet back home and it worked just fine.

The problem might be your school is shaping the bandwidth. Here's an example of how a p2p bandwidth shaper can work against Gnutella: Bandwidth Shaper Sample - typical of how some schools & ISP's use it (click on link) ie: giving priority to net surfing & low priorities to p2p sharing.

Try a magnet link & see what speeds you get: http://www.magnetmix.com/video.shtml
If slow, then the problem is most likely the school.

I spoke to my ISP, It is them that are preventing the normal downloads, I tried the magnet file , did not work, also downloads slow ....

thanks to everyone for their effort, I'll keep trying or I'll just drink lots of
"Lates" at Starbucks, there Limewire works fine .............

Try at different times of the day. Some isp's only shape p2p bandwidth at peak or non-peak hours.
