I know this question is often asked. But I cant play avi. files, and when I had my laptop I downloaded Divx, and that worked. But it doesnt help on either of my desktops.

It still isnt working with the VLC. It says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Its whenever I download an avi. file and try to play it on my windows media player. This is on a brand new XPS.

Wow that was fast. :D Comment: if VLC can't play the file, then it's either a real player file, newest wmv format or no good.

I feel silly asking, but how do u change it so VLC is your default player?

When I right click there isnt any option that says open or open with. I have the new Windows XPS.

problem is I dont think thats for Windows XP, because I cant find any of that stuff.

XPS is apparently a subroutine of a Vista app...it is NOT an OS...so I have no clue as to what this d00d thinks he's talking about

Its a Dell XPS, Im just talking about what system im running.

nevermind, thats the name of it, it runs windows media center, its like XP

one says .adm files included with windows, only one, its some file

so the system is a Dell XPS (their new flagship model) and I assume you are running XP MCE

if you don't have the ability to right click and choose open with, then I think something is wrong....let me do some thinking about it, as there just may be some setting that is not enabled to allow you to see the 'open with' option (my version of MCE certainly has this ability, then again I built my machine as opposed to sacrifice my needs by buying a **** dell)

Dont forget to right click on the file from your shared folder outside of limewire, and then select open with...:dance:

right click on the file, choose properties, then you see by top Opens With and the option to change...do so

Yea, I stilll need help with setting it to default, I can play it on VLC, I just have to do a looong line of things to open it with VLC. When I press properties on the video files, and select VLC to always open with, it still opens with windows media player. Oh and Hobo, for some reason I cant send u a pm. It says u have selected not to recieve any.

By right clicking on your movie, from your shared folder outside of limewire...:rolleyes_2:

Joe, you might need to change the file types that WMP associates with too!
In WMP, go tools > options > file types. Now untick the file types that you don't want WMP to play. Click Apply & then ok:wink:

This should do the trick. Also some other pointers about VLC that affects some people might be worth seeing: The Vlc player (click on link); re: previewing.

Thank you for everyones help. I know how to play it using VLC now, I just need to set VLC to be my default media player instead of my Windows media player. If anyone can tell me, that'd be great.

Lord of the rings in the example you show in ur link, on what system is that?

win 2000 & Wondering Why's is XP. If you look carefully there's little if no difference. Except for colours & patterns, etc.

Would of post my question on the other thread, but more people seem to be looking at this one.
