Haven't posted in a while but...

I know this question is often asked. But I cant play avi. files, and when I had my laptop I downloaded Divx, and that worked. But it doesnt help on either of my desktops.

It still isnt working with the VLC. It says "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file." Its whenever I download an avi. file and try to play it on my windows media player. This is on a brand new XPS.

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 03:21 PM

thanks, Im trying what you said now.

Lord of the Rings October 25th, 2006 03:21 PM

See if these are of any help (1) Setting Default video app & (2) http://www.gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?t=62899

Wow that was fast. :D Comment: if VLC can't play the file, then it's either a real player file, newest wmv format or no good.

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 03:24 PM

I feel silly asking, but how do u change it so VLC is your default player?

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 03:25 PM

ok Im trying to sort it out right now

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 03:28 PM

ok, still not sure how to change my default player to VLC on a XP, any help?

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 03:55 PM

When I right click there isnt any option that says open or open with. I have the new Windows XPS.

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 04:36 PM

problem is I dont think thats for Windows XP, because I cant find any of that stuff.

Peerless October 25th, 2006 04:56 PM

Xps???

Peerless October 25th, 2006 05:20 PM

XPS is apparently a subroutine of a Vista app...it is NOT an OS...so I have no clue as to what this d00d thinks he's talking about

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 05:23 PM

Its a Dell XPS, Im just talking about what system im running.

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 05:25 PM

Joe the Porsche October 25th, 2006 05:50 PM

so the system is a Dell XPS (their new flagship model) and I assume you are running XP MCE

if you don't have the ability to right click and choose open with, then I think something is wrong....let me do some thinking about it, as there just may be some setting that is not enabled to allow you to see the 'open with' option (my version of MCE certainly has this ability, then again I built my machine as opposed to sacrifice my needs by buying a **** dell)

wondering why October 25th, 2006 06:11 PM

Dont forget to right click on the file from your shared folder outside of limewire, and then select open with...

Peerless October 25th, 2006 06:15 PM

right click on the file, choose properties, then you see by top Opens With and the option to change...do so

I could really use some help. Just became a member and DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING about anything with downloading and burining. I have been downloading since 9:46. And can not figure out this forum and how to post to it so someone can help. Can one of you help. How I got her not sure.

birdy October 25th, 2006 09:34 PM

Go back to the start of LW section:
https://www.gnutellaforums.com/limewire-wireshare-cross-platform/

Now find the section that's most appropriate for your question & go there. In the top left corner you'll see a "New Thread" tab...click on that & you can post a new thread. Before you do though...use the forum search, your question might have been answered before. Also look at the top of each forum section. There are stickies (in red) that have answers to the most common questions:wink: Check out the various sections .

If you do need to post a new thread, describe your problem really well.

Joe the Porsche October 26th, 2006 04:57 PM

Yea, I stilll need help with setting it to default, I can play it on VLC, I just have to do a looong line of things to open it with VLC. When I press properties on the video files, and select VLC to always open with, it still opens with windows media player. Oh and Hobo, for some reason I cant send u a pm. It says u have selected not to recieve any.

And this window at all....

By right clicking on your movie, from your shared folder outside of limewire...:rolleyes_2:

Joe, you might need to change the file types that WMP associates with too!
In WMP, go tools > options > file types. Now untick the file types that you don't want WMP to play. Click Apply & then ok:wink:

This should do the trick. Also some other pointers about VLC that affects some people might be worth seeing: The Vlc player (click on link); re: previewing.

Joe the Porsche October 27th, 2006 02:20 PM

Thank you for everyones help. I know how to play it using VLC now, I just need to set VLC to be my default media player instead of my Windows media player. If anyone can tell me, that'd be great.

Joe the Porsche October 27th, 2006 03:21 PM

I also just posted a new problem I have concerning burning movies to DVD's in the tips and tricks section.

Read this thread & look at the pictures. It's already been nicely explained by Wondering Why. :D For the slower ones, see Setting Default video app

Joe the Porsche October 28th, 2006 09:49 AM

Lord of the rings in the example you show in ur link, on what system is that?

Lord of the Rings October 28th, 2006 10:01 AM

win 2000 & Wondering Why's is XP. If you look carefully there's little if no difference. Except for colours & patterns, etc.

Joe the Porsche October 28th, 2006 05:39 PM

Would of post my question on the other thread, but more people seem to be looking at this one.
