Default How do I install something I've downloaded

I have just installed Limewire. No prob. I downloaded a program today and it was sent to documents and settings/ Yatta, yatta, yatta...What do I do next to install it to my computer? Also...I scanned the newly downloaded file with Norton Antivirus and now the anti virus locks up before showing the complete "results" Page. I can say that there are no red warnings on the Nort. home page but i'm afraid to shut my computer down if the program I've downloaded isn't safe. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

Well, I suppose that this is the first time that your Norton has behave that strangely......
So the bets are: 99% VIRUS vs. 1% LUCKY, NO VIRUS......

Well, your choice......

Default I think it's OK now But...

I agree. I didn't even wait for a response. That evening I just deleted the program instead of installing it, deleted Limewire and repaired the Norton file. A lot of work and time. I enjoy the benefits of Limewire but now I'm afraid to down load it again. Seems I still had the problem with Norton untill I deleted and completely removed Limewire from my system. I'm a laymen and have been learning through trial and error over the years. Could it be my settings? If so how can I fix it and are there any hints for safer downloading and installing of P2P files? Thanks SL

Well, I do not believe that LW was the problem. It was the program file you have downloaded with LW.

LW for itself is sound and save. The files you download with it might not be though. It is always advisable to have some Security Programs handy to scan any kind of file downloaded from the Internet.

Of course, there will never be a 100% protection, though with some common sense and the necessary caution you should be as save as possible.

If you have some spare time read through the stickies here in the forum, or use the search function here and type "virus" or "files aware". You will find tons of advice and suggestions that will help you to get along quite safely when using a P2P client....

Cheers

Default Thanks much

Thank you for your help with this. I've upgraded our Noton security and I feel safer using Limewire now. It removes any threats and the bad downloads. It even removes the problems if they have been installed without catching the virus...Much safer. Thanks again. SL

Default Heres a tip

I've always made it a habbit to scan anything other than mp3 files for virus's. There are alot of Back Door Virus's out there.

For example :

If you search for a program and you know its going to be a quite large program and you get search results of a file 187K then 9 outta 10 times its a virus. Its what I call a "CLONE VIRUS" it shows up in LimeWire of any search result.

Example: I search for Pinnacle Studio 10.5 Titanium - File size is 1.25 GIG - but my search results only show up exe files that are alot smaller. 9 out of 10 times it will be a virus or usless adware.
