Need more sources...different question then others...

I have Windows XP and the newest version of limewire. I know there are a lot of posts about problems with needing more sources and everyone says that it is because they are fake files. But I never had a problem with this until a few days ago. I used to be able to download almost every song and then I got on about two days ago and I can't download anything now. I looked up the problem on google and I couldn't find any solutions so I'm hoping someone can help me here.

wondering why March 27th, 2007 01:14 AM

What can we say, the problem is getting worse all the time....Just be patient and try right clicking on the search result box and Search > Get more results and see if that brings up more sources...:rolleyes_2:

mickjapa108 March 27th, 2007 03:42 AM

It could be the Licence warning thing.
Just have a look,
Go, Tools/Options/Searching/Basic, it says, "Show Licence Warning"
Un tick the box if you dont want to filter out Files.

This option is enabled at setup, The choice is your decision.
Do a test to see if search resolts improve.
You can reverse this change at any time.
Peace.

NoflippingElle March 27th, 2007 09:17 AM

Well I checked the license warning box and it was unchecked. And I tried clicking get more sources but it just switched from need more sources to waiting for busy sources...and then it still didn't work. Hah. Thanks for those ideas though. :) Anybody else know what could possibly be wrong.

birdy March 27th, 2007 02:18 PM

Try deleting LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 below (also point 2 if you've used much older LW versions in the past).
Fixes for LimeWire

Deleting that folder will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things to the way you like them;)

NoflippingElle March 27th, 2007 11:00 PM

Ok so just to let you know...you're amazing. Hah. It worked. I can download stuff again. Thanks so much. I really appreciate it. :xirokrotima:

xxvicious13xx March 28th, 2007 08:26 PM

question

i have a question about that i have the same problem and i went to go delete the folder and the only file that looked similar was my LimeWire folder which was in my program files i went to delete it and it said cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk
what should i do?

birdy March 28th, 2007 08:34 PM

The folder's hidden by default, so you'll have to show hidden files & folders to be able to see it;)

Go to My Computer, click on tools > folder options > view. Put a dot in the circle next to 'show hidden files & folders' > apply > ok. Now you should be able to find the preferences folder.

xxvicious13xx March 28th, 2007 09:48 PM

i did that

i did that and it wasnt there i also did the search and it wasnt there
i downloaded lime wire again thinking that might help and it didnt
it takes forever to search for music in general even bands that are by definition popular
ive been using limewire for so long since like version 1 and i have never had a problem with this, someone mentioned something to me about a brick wall at the bottom left hand corner
does that have anything to do with it?

birdy March 28th, 2007 10:07 PM

Did you look for a folder in the old location of C:\Documents and Settings\your username\.limewire? Since you've used much older versions of LW, you'll most likely have a folder there too (that one's not hidden).
Otherwise, I'm stumped! You've gotta have a prefs folder:p

Can you give us your details, please?
System details - help us to help you

xxvicious13xx March 29th, 2007 12:15 PM

ill check there then because i have seen that folder

xxvicious13xx March 29th, 2007 09:06 PM

ok i went to that folder and opened it and there was nothing there that resembled a prefences folder i had to delete that folder A LONG TIME AGO like a long time ago, but i dont know where it could be or what happend to it

birdy March 29th, 2007 10:15 PM

The .limewire folder is the preferences folder. There's no folder called 'preferences' inside it. You don't have to open it, just delete the whole .limewire folder. You might've deleted it before, it's a fix for quite a few problems. But after you deleted the folder, a new one would've been created the next time you started LW.

Same with the prefs folder in the new location, within Application Data. It's called LimeWire & you just delete the whole thing, no need to open it.

xxvicious13xx March 30th, 2007 09:11 PM

ok i did that and its still having trouble
it does the same thing but now
it connects for a long time and then says needs more sources
it also takes a long time to preform a search

mickjapa108 April 1st, 2007 02:32 AM

OK Vicious.
Fill this in like Birdy asked, Guessing is getting us nowhere.

System details - help us to help you Please.

Cut n paste these Questions, put your answers in bold text Thank You.

Recently there's been a problem with people not providing enough details about their setup - despite being asked again & again.
So let's make it easy for everyone...the details that we need if we're going to be able to help with complex problems are:

1. what OS version? (eg: Windows 98, XP,OSX, Vista)
2. What firewalls you have ?
3. How much ram ?
4. Hard Disk space available ?
5. Connection type (eg: dialup, broadband, cable, etc.) ?
6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers ?
7. Where are you trying to connect from (house, appartment complex, school, student accomodation, work, etc.) ?
8. What version,LimeWire & Java,Go to L/W's Help/About L/W, THIS show both LW & Java version.?
9. Who is your ISP provider (Internet Service Provider) ?
10. Do this test click here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ should say 'Your test worked!. What happens ?
11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs? If yes, please give details of set up.
12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.?
13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface ?
14. Have you given full permisions for LimeWire to pass through your Firewall ?
15. XP users, Please state XP firewall on or off.?

These are all contained within the sticky Connection problems? Check here first!
but possibly some people are getting a bit confused or lost when we direct them to this sticky & ask them to provide their details.

This information can be vital
For instance, some ISPs are known for blocking p2p/throttling bandwidth,
some connection devices are known for being unreliable in certain situations.

So please, help us to help you & provide as much info as you can.
If you're new to LW or new to computers & aren't sure how to answer some questions,
or don't know what an ISP or router is - just say so. Nobody's going to yell at you:wink:
Even if you can't answer all the questions in one go...don't worry. Do the best you can & we'll take it from there.

Hi Vicious.
First my friend, you need to turn one of your Firewalls off.
I would generally say, turn off W-XP, But knowing the problems with Macafee
at present, (Incompatibility) issues, I leave the choice to you.
You must turn one or the other off. then configure the remaining one to allow
LimeWire to pass through.

Next we need the model No's of you router, ITS a MUST, look on the side & it
should be there eg... "Model DSL-504T" or similar.
Have you made different static IPs n portfawarded for each computer ?
Use a different listening port for each L/W app.

xxvicious13xx April 3rd, 2007 04:21 PM

my xp fire wall was already off so i turned off my macafee and nothing happend
then i turned on the xp and left macafee off
i dont know if this is the model of my router but this is the number i got
dpx100 Modem p/n 749874
if thats not correct then i must not be looking in the right place
i dont know if i have different static IPs n portfawarded for each computer
i dont even think i know what that means
also i downloaded a song last night and it took forever at least 2 or 3 hours
also when it was almost completed the percentage started decreasing

mickjapa108 April 3rd, 2007 11:21 PM

Hi Vicious.
I cant find any D Link router with those No'S Can you check their correct Please.
There are allot of people having trouble with McAfee right now and it is known to block limewire. Try turning it off and see if LimeWire will connect.

To disable firewall protection:
On the McAfee SecurityCenter pane, do one of the following:
Click Internet & Network, and then Configure.
Click Advanced Menu, then Configure on the Home pane, and then point to Internet & Network.
On the Internet & Network Configuration pane, under Firewall protection is enabled, select Off.
A warning appears saying 'When firewall protection is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to intrusion and unwanted network connections'.
In the warning box, you have the option of automatically re-enabling the firewall after 15 minutes (you can change this to 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 60 minutes).
Click OK to disable the firewall. Clicking Cancel leaves the Firewall protection enabled.

http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/ Say thanks to Grandpa for info.

xxvicious13xx April 4th, 2007 01:55 PM

ok i havent done the macafee steps yet but about the router
the dlink is a wireless card
i gave you the router number in which the dlink gets its service from
but that router is called web star
i dont know if that helps
i hope so
and thanks for the other stuff i hope it works!

mickjapa108 April 5th, 2007 10:28 AM

Hi Vicious.
Im sorry I just cant find any info You say Wireless & those numbers are for a cable modem.
Please clarify

Wasser April 5th, 2007 01:26 PM

Well I am having the same problem in the last week and I didn't have any problem before. I have XPpro, Windows std firewall, 56K modem and Java 1.5.0.01_b08 and the latest LW.

I cannot follow the early post guide to deleting a file - but hey it's an all new download.

Searches fine but sits connecting... seemingly forever then need more sources. did 10 different popular downloads - same, same.

What to do?

Wasser April 5th, 2007 07:39 PM

Mine works on some now.

xxvicious13xx April 5th, 2007 07:46 PM

ok ill do the best i can
my computer is linked to another computer in the house
with a web star router
and those were the numbers i got for it
my dlink is a wireless card and i cant remove it, it has a connecting router that is hooked up to the main one and then the computer it is also dlink
would you like those numbers instead?

i also did the mcafee stuff and it said my limewire had full access so i shut it off just in case
i follow the steps you had given and i didnt find any of the things it said
i assumed the pane was the icon
if not i guess that is where i went wrong
and even when all my firewalls are off the brick wall is still there

mickjapa108 April 6th, 2007 04:10 AM

Hi Vicious.
Man for me, you have 2, possibly 3 problems, Macafee, routing & possibly your ISP shaping your connection.
First Check Your ISP, ring them & ask direct are you shaping P2P traffic, ASK
for that in writing, they wont fob you off then,If there not,Great!! we can continue, If they are shaping, theres not much point in doing the rest of this.

2...Other users have said disabling Macafee dose not Work, you need to uninstall it, Here is a link to a removal tool at Macafee web site.
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/
If you must, you can try installing it after you are sure you have your routing
configured correctly.

3..I would make a new thread (How do I portfaward 2 computers on 1 con.) cos i'm lost with this subject.
It may go unseen here
Help Here Anybody
If I can help with anything els just shout.
Peace.

mickjapa108 April 6th, 2007 04:18 AM
