Puter Idiot looking for help

First of all, I think I have looked at like 200 posts/threads tonight trying to make sure im not posting over top of someone else. Basically my problem is that I am interested in trying to d/l some pc games off LW. I see some that say app and some that say zip, honestly I dont know what the diff is. I really dont care, I would just like some help if there is anyone out there that can tell me what I need to do to be able to actually play these games after I d/l them. I have tried to d/l some that were zip and it seems like the extraction part is were I get totally lost. Im not even sure if you should even be able to get the whole game actually.

I just bought a new computer, Im sorry, but I dont know much other than the box says operates at 3.46 GHz, 120 GB hard drive, 512 MB DDR2 memory, and I use cable modem, and vista operating system.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

Most of us in this forum do not recommend that anyone download zip or exe files, here are some reasons:-

However, if you will insist then insure that you have an Anti-Virus application that has the latest virus definitions installed and make sure you virus check everything you download.

Well, first off thank you for the heads up, even though ive already d/l a few. I am currently d/l AVG to check for viruses now, so thats done. I have 2 ?'s if you dont mind.

Basically are you saying not to try and d/l any pc games? If I am able to, what file extensions are safer to d/l?

Also, I have been trying now for 2 days to start getting some movies on L/W. I dont have any problem getting them d/l they play in WMP for me just fine. The only problem is when I go to Dvdsanta to transfer them or do whatever your suppose to do, They just get the encoding process started and then an error message comes up and my windows explorer and dvdsanta get shutdown.

Now, Im not sure what stuff I need on my puter to get the movies onto a dvd so i can play in my home dvd player, but I have been reading posts for 2 days and I think ive d/l more codecs than ive even heard of before. Also I just bought this puter 3 days ago, so I did find out that it looks like it came with almost all of those codecs AND a crap load more already on the puter. Ive tried AVSmedia, and it was depressing, because it worked great, first time, right out of the shoot, until I went to check on it and saw the preview showing a banner in the center of the picture the whole time it was d/l. I have tried dvdsanta, but as you read I cant get it working. Hmmm let me see whatelse have I d/l to try and get this going correctly? LOL

If there is any way you might be able to help a cupter idiot out, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Well, Wondering Why is the DVDSanta guru of this forum. If she sees this post maybe she will help you out.

I use Nero to burn my movies but, I must admit, I don't burn that many.

As for safe file extensions, I believe *.bin files could be safe but they could also be booby trapped, i.e. viruses or spyware disguised as game files.

However, the only sure way to insure that you are safe is never let you common sense desert you, always keep AV up to date, get yourself a firewall (like Zone Alarm) and use the experience you have gained to stay away from dodgy files that litter the Gnutella network.
