Just download any Magnetmix file...it's just a test to see how fast your download is (things should download quickly).

XP has it's own firewall, make sure it's configured to allow LW;)
User Cant Connect - LimeWire

HughesNet have a FAP, maybe you've been hit by that?
The Fair Access Policy (FAP)

Try changing ports. In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 64049 (or something in the range of 49152 - 65535) > Apply > ok.

You could try port forwarding for your router. The instructions are here.
Port Forwarding for the Dlink DI-524
Don't forget the step of setting up a static IP address. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the router all have to be the same number;)

SillyWilly June 30th, 2007 07:55 PM

the download from that site didn't work it said connecting and eventually changed to need more sources. as for the fap, i was aware of that but the thing i don't understand is i used to use bear share with the same internet provider. i changed the port and tried port fowarding but still didn't seem to work. is there anything else you can think of to fix this?

p.s. unfortunately, the windows firewall link you gave me was blocked by my content filter and with my luck that's the thing keeping limewire from working. is there any way you can tell me what that link says and instructions for the firewall to allow lw? thank you soo soo much!! : ]

This is from that link ;)

First make sure that LimeWire is running, and then open the Control Panel by going to Start > Settings. Switch to Classic View if you are not already in that mode.

Double-click the Windows Firewall icon to open the settings.

If the firewall is off, then there is no need to continue. The Windows Firewall will not prevent LimeWire from connecting. If it is on, click the Exceptions tab.

Make sure that LimeWire is listed as an exception and that it is checked. Click Edit to make sure that the correct path has been specified. Note that if LimeWire is not running, you will not see LimeWire in the list unless you added it manually in the past. If no exception is found with the correct path when LimeWire launches, an exception is created. When LimeWire is closed, the exception is deleted.

okay something changed after i did that.......now when i choose a song to download, it says connecting ("x" hosts tried) the "x" continues to go up right now it is 261 hosts tried on one song. now what?

birdy June 30th, 2007 11:37 PM

Have you got green connection bars & no firewall icon now?

If songs sit connecting for ages & then get stuck needing sources forever, you're probably seeing fake files. Try using the All Types search, look for album or artist rather than song title & go for a file with 10 sources or less.
These threads have more info & tips.

How to find music

: [ bad news. i have a full connection, but the firewall picture is still here even though it's status is off. and when i tried to download another song with two sources and it still said need more sources. the one from earlier is still connecting now with 1451 hosts tried. i'm really sorry because i'm trying everything you say but nothing seems to work. is there any chance there is one more thing i can try to figure it out?

birdy July 1st, 2007 12:27 AM

If a file has 1451 sources, it's a fake!!!!!

Does every file you're trying to download give you the connecting/need more sources thing? Do a test...try to download an old song (2 years or more) with just a few sources.

If you still see connecting/need more sources, try this: Delete LW's preferences folder when LW's properly closed. See point 3 here & also point 2 if you've used older versions of LW in the past (there could be a folder in either location).
Fixes for LimeWire
This will kill all of your settings within options, you'll have to go back through afterwards & reset things. If you're not sure of your settings, go through LW's tools > options & write them all down, so that you can reset things later.

SillyWilly July 1st, 2007 12:49 AM

okay let's see. i deleted the lw preferences folder and now i'm trying to download a song from like the 90s. is that right? it has two sources and..........now it says it needs more. i don't know if there's even anything you can do at this point. am i completely wasting my time and yours and just better off buying all my music from here? i chose find sources now it's counting down from 300 seconds to find a source even though it shows having 2.

birdy July 1st, 2007 12:58 AM

Try installing a different version of LW. It's not too hard to try & you never know, it might help. The latest stable release is 4.12.4 & the Beta is 4.12.10.

SillyWilly July 1st, 2007 01:18 AM

okay i tried it. i got version 4.12.4 and at the first download attempt, i had to wait about a minute for it to begin downloading. then it was downloading from one host until it go to 3%then stopped again : [ i've waited another 3 minutes or so and so far it's stuck on connecting. anything i can re-do with this new version or anything like that to finnaly try to have this problem solved?

EDIT: it started downloading again and the speed is at about 21kb/sec. normal?
EDIT again: stopped at 35% says connecting again. [just in case you might need to know that for any reason]

SillyWilly July 1st, 2007 01:53 AM

it's downloading again, at 3kb/sec won't get past that now.

birdy July 1st, 2007 02:10 AM

It sounds like your ISP to me, that stuff with the downloads stopping during download sounds a bit strange.
If those magnetmix files download slowly (or in case not at all) it can often point to an ISP problem.

Give me a little while to check around.

birdy July 1st, 2007 02:37 AM

Ok, check this out.
Review of HughesNet Satellite Broadband

This review suggests that there's an FAP & also bandwidth throttling for p2p programs. It's a fairly recent review. If this is what's going on, there's probably not much that you can do.

SillyWilly July 1st, 2007 11:23 AM

thank you so so much!!! you're right, this is probably as good as it's going to get. thank you so much for putting up with both of our frustrations!!! : ]
