 Just let it soak! Like a solution for stained laundry, what worked for me with LimeWire was patient soaking. I launched the program, and let it run in the background for a few hours (with connection "on") while I was doing other work. I don't know if it will work everytime or for everyone, but it worked for me. Subsequent searches were fast, and 90% of the downloads were successful. Even red ones (behind firewalls.)
