New Isp Provider Download Speeds Have Dropped?

hello guys, need some advice ragarding my download speeds!

I recently decided to go with a new ISP provider (fast.co.uk) since then i have noticed a drop in my download speeds.

My previous ISP was AOL & i was on the, upto 2MB package, my download speeds were reasonably good, i could download a (700.0mb) movie within 60mins! my speed was usualy between 130kb/s and 170kb/s

With this new provider, i am on the 8mg package & i am recieving atleast 5.5mbp, which is alot more speed, but for some reason my download speed has dramaticly dropped!

I have been assured that my line is in good working order & i am recieving exactly 5.5mbp speeds, so why is limewire downloading this slowley?

i spoke to a technichian, who told me i may need to locate the IP ADDRESS, for Limewire?

do i need to re configure limewire, due to changing to a new ISP?????

would really appreciate any kind of advice on this matter thanx!

i noticed the drop in speed on the same day, i migrated to my new ISP!

Did you get a new modem/router when you signed up with them ??

tranceliner November 16th, 2007 01:04 PM

no i didn't recieve a modem router, i am using a (bt voyager 105 adsl modem) that was supplied to me, by AOL many years ago!

could this be causing the problem? it's an old modem & the drivers are old too!

do you think, this modem is compatible with up to 8meg speeds, or does the problem lie with limewire?

surfing the net, doesn't seem too bad, just downloading off limewire has gone very slow!

I am surprised that you did not get a new modem when you signed up with Fast.co.uk, because most ISPs have a preferred modem/router that they either recommend or supply you with.

I know that AOL prefers BT Voyager Modems, because I have a friend with AOL, and Bulldog likes Thomson SpeedTouch products. Therefore, I have some suggestions:

a) Find out from Fast.co.uk which ASDL Modems or Modem/Routers they would recommend.

b) Ask if they use "Bandwidth Shaping" equipment, i.e. which restricts P2P communication while allowing browser Internet traffic through unhindered.

c) You may want to try the following also:

hi Bob, thankyou for ur reply! for some reason (fast.co.uk) do not supply a modem, and i have been assured by them, that they do not shape p2p traffic...

i did alot of research, before i chose my ISP and fast.co.uk came highly recommended... they are not a large ISP provider, but are voted as one of the best!

i am considering purchasing a ethernet router/modem, maybe that will resolve the speed issue with limewire, if that does not work, then i really don't know what could be wrong!

thanxs, for the link, i will def look into, how i can fix limewire, if limewire really is the problem!

In the mean time, would appreciate any more advice, from people who have experienced this similar problem, when changing ISP... THANX

Peerless November 16th, 2007 06:31 PM

hmmm..well first off I am a Mod here so I can view your IP address....I traced your IP addy and get some rather interesting results....like it apparently bounces from the UK to Germany and then thinks it resolves in Amsterdam...very strange....another IP locater couldn't resolve it at all...perhaps it is this 'issue' that is causing your situation...

tranceliner November 16th, 2007 06:48 PM

hey thanx peerless, i will mention this information regarding the (IP address) to my ISP tomorow morning, maybe it is something that can be looked at.

i was considering installing java again, but i really can't see how that could be the problem, seeing as only yesterday Limewire was working like a dream & that was with a upto 2mbp connection....

i changed my ISP with speeds of upto 5.5mbp & limewire is even slower than before..... PUZZLED

Modems & Modem/Routers

Tranceliner

Although what I am about to write has no relation to your original query, if you have more than one PC in your household then get yourself a modem/router. That way all your PCs will have access to the Internet and you will have the capability to add extra facilities such as Internet radio, streaming music from your PC and/or Internet phones (VOIP).

The extra (hair greying/falling out :bangh: ) complexities that modem/routers bring you, in my opinion, can only be worth it if you have family members pushing you for their own PC/Internet connection.

But if you are a one PC and Internet connection household then stick with a simple (plug & play) USB ASDL modem, like the Thomson SpeedTouch 330 (now available for under £18.00)

Thomson SpeedTouch 330 Modem

Good Luck

one final thought..this just might be a tcp settings issue...then again it might not be...

download and run tcp optimizer and take the time to read the instructions so that you can optimize your settings...use the backup function to save your optimized settings in case windows update changes them back to default..

Thanx peerless, but i think i have figured out, what the problem may be...

When i open Limewire, i have noticed the BRICK WALL remains on all the time, this has only started happening since i changed to a new ISP & removed the AOL software that was on previously!

my connection on Limewire is still going to TURBO charged, but my download speeds are much much slower than before!

i'm trying to figure out, how to get rid of the block wall, i have already re installed Limewire pro twice!

i have also deleted the the preference folder, but nothing has changed...

what other options do i have, what is causing the brick wall? i'm sure it isn't my Avast anti virus, due to the fact it has never blocked me in the past.

any suggestions, are much appreciated.. thanx!

Could you supply these details please, then we may be able to see what is causing your firewall...;)

tranceliner November 17th, 2007 02:25 PM

Hi Wandering Why! These are the details u required

01. Os Version = Windows Xp Pro (Firewall Disabled)

02. What Firewall Am I using = Just Avast Anti Virus Home Edition

03. System Ram = 2GB

04. Hard Disk Space = 90% Available

05. Conection = Broadband upto 8mg (Fast.co.uk)

06. Modem/Router = Bt Voyager 105 usb adsl (Not Supplied By Isp)

07. Connection From = Home

08. Version Of Limewire = Limewire Pro 4.12.11

09. Version Of Java Runtime = 5.0 Update 9

10. Www3.limewire.com6346 Test = Test Worked

11. Are You Sharing A Connection = No

12. Is This A New Problem? Yes, Never Had This Prob Before Untill Now

13. Do You Have A Brick Wall? Yes Yes Yes :bangh:

14. Are You Port Forwarding Or Is UPNP Enabled? I Really Don't Know (Need Advice On This Matter)

15. What Security Programme Am I Using? Avast Anti Virus

16. What Country Am I In? United Kingdom

I must point out that i have never had this prob before, i have only now started to experience, very slow downloads, since changing ISP, they did not supply me with a modem/router, so using the previouse one by AOL

My new ISP have assured me, they are not shaping p2p traffick...

would appraciate any help on this matter

wondering why November 17th, 2007 02:48 PM

Well there are no guides supplied for your modem at Port Forward.com, so I googled it and couldn't really find anything about it having a Nat Firewall, as it's just a modem not a modem/router...

There is nothing else in your details that indicate this firewall either...
So I am going to suggest trying these fixes as they have worked for others....

How Do I Change Ports?

Hello guys, can someone explain to me, how to change ports in limewire, or atleast explain to me about PORTS i am having alot of problems with my connection since changing ISP

i have a constant brick wall on limewire, my dl speeds have dropped drammaticly!

I even installed FROSTWIRE on my pc & that had a brickwall too!

could this problem be caused by my ISP??

tranceliner November 18th, 2007 02:51 PM

Is This Normal In Limewire?

ok, i have a brick wall in Limewire that will not go away, but my connection is still going upto turbo charged, i can still download stuff, but at a much slower speed than before!

is the brickwall causing the slow down in speeds, or do i need to look elsewhere?

could this be a problem caused by new my ISP? i have deleted the preference folder within limewire, but still no luck... i have configured my Anti virus, but this hasn't resolved the matter...

I even went to the length of downloading other p2p programmes (i.e) frostwire, but same brick wall in that too!

i have also tried using utorrent, again i have a network connection problem with that too!

Is it likley that my ISP is blocking me somehow? even tho they are assuring me, that i am getting full speeds down my line?

the modem i am using was from my previous ISP (AOL) could there be a compatibility issue there?

please in need of some solid advice, considering getting rid of my new ISP if matter isn't resolved... thanx

In LW go tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to something in the range of 49152 - 65535 (eg 65000) > apply > ok.
You can try any ports in that range.

Your ISP say that they don't throttle p2p & I can't find anything to suggest that they do. Have you tried using LW outside of peak hours?

You could also try the advice here (the first few posts by murasame), if you haven't already.
A few things to consider while configuring Limewire for optimal performance...

thanx birdy, i have tried limewire outside the peaktime, but i have the same speed issue! i downloaded frostwire, just to see if i have the same problem in that & again the connection had a brick wall...

i even tried utorrent & i am having speed issues with that too!

everything worked fine on my pc, until the day i migrated to a new ISP, i am recieving upto 5.5mbp down my phone line, but it seems like anything i use p2p related is more like dial up speeds!

could this problem have anything to do with my modem? i am using the same usb adsl modem provided to me, by my previouse ISP, fast.co.uk did not provide me with a modem.

could there be a compatibilty issue? that brick wall was not in limewire until the day i changed my ISP, so i am guessing it is either my modem, or my ISP...

would it help if i changed port in limewire?

appreciate any advice! thanx

Peerless November 18th, 2007 03:33 PM

hmm..well I was just looking through some mail and actually took the time to read the advertisement from AT&T....they talk big numbers with their internet service..uh huh...and this brings back to mind the time a salesman came to my door and tried to get me to change over....yeah....they talk big numbers....but...BUT...there is a little game I think they play..I talk in MB/s (bytes)...they talk mbps (bits)...there is a factor of 8 difference!....

so if you used to have a 2MB/s package and now have an 8mbps package you are actually SLOWER!...by a factor of 2!!!!!

tranceliner November 18th, 2007 03:45 PM

sorry peerless, it's actualy the upto 8mb/s package i am on, so i guess it isn't the speed i am getting from them, that is the problem!

It seems that your BT Voyager 105 has a rep for being troublesome, I've got one question for you:

As this modem has been around for a long time, have you updated it's drivers to the latest available?

This just may solve your problem.

hey bob, i managed to get rid of the brick wall, in limewire!

My Windows Xp firewall was turned on when i changed over to my new ISP, they configured some things on my OS and i didn't realise the Xp firewall had been left on!

Once i took the Xp firewall off, no more brick wall left to annoy me! :xirokrotima:

Altho this has still not completley resolved my speed issues, i'm still getting rather slow download speed, considering i am getting 5.5mg down my phone line!

I've decided to invest in a Belkin/Modem router, as my ISP is suggesting, this will fix my speed problems.

Is a new router/modem with ethernet connection likley to improve my speeds?

thanx for all the advice guys!
