[Firewall?] Aldoria's Connection Problem (5 green bars but slow downloads)

1. OS version?
Windows Vista, "hacked" Administrator account (more access than Admin). (How do I Enable the Windows Vista Administrator Account? for more information)

2. What firewalls you have?
Just Windows Firewall, I've tried turning it off, and tried keeping it on. I've tried allowing Limewire, and not allowing it.

3. How much ram?
2GB

4. Hard Disk space available?
199GB Free, 298GB Total

5. Connection type?
DSL

6. Modem & router brand name & model numbers?
SIEMENS Gigaset SE567

7. Where are you trying to connect from:
Home.

8. What version of LimeWire (LW) & Java do you have?
Limewire 4.18.3 & Java 1.6.0_02

9. Who is your ISP?
Aliant

10. Do this simple test for us. Using your browser go here: http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ The page should say 'Your test worked!'. What happens when you go there?
It says "Your test worked!!"

11. Are you sharing the connection with other computers or p2p sharing programs?
No.

12. Is this a your 1st try at LW or is this a new problem with an experienced user.
I've been using Limewire for years and never had this happen before. This happened a few months ago, and I've been to lazy to fix it.

13. Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of LW's interface?
Yes, but I've even turned off my firewall, and allowed Limewire, and it's still there. Weird.

14. For those using a modem/router, how is your modem/router set up...are you port forwarding or is UPnP enabled?
UPnP is enabled.

15. What security programs are you using (antivirus etc)?
Norton Antivirus

16. What country are you living in?
Canada, New Brunswick

Additional Information: I know it says I have a Firewall on the Limewire, but I've tried turning off my firewall. I think Windows Firewall is the only one I have, but if anyone knows of a Norton Firewall I may have, could someone tell me how to access it and disable it? (Only if you don't see another problem above)
Also, I've alredy re-installed LimeWire.
Oh yeah, I've also got all 5 bars green, but my download speed is still the *****. It takes me forever to search for stuff, longer to download, and that's only IF it will download.

have you tried my "how to connect thread, 3 easy steps" give it a shot. Its simple and works for most.

Aldoria August 3rd, 2008 09:20 PM

That link you gave me only works for XP I think, because there are no 'Documents and Settings' in Windows Vista.
And I've ran a search for LimeWire Application Data Folder, and couldn't find it.

But yes, I saw the thread.

Theres got to be some kind of application data or preferences folder, when you do your search just use the word limewire and see what all pops up. worst come to worst, uninstall limewire do your search, delete everything that says limewire, then reinstall lime wire. It's been working for almost everyone that used to have no problems with limewire.

In Windows Vista to enable viewing of hidden files in any windows folder click tools > folder options at the top. click on that and then view then show hidden files and folders. it is at C:\Users\name you use to login\AppData\Roaming\Limewire It MIGHT also be at C:\users\myname\.limewire Any confirmation of where you find it would be welcome This seems to depend on the version of Limewire you are using.

this will have to be done while limewire is closed. after the folder is deleted restart and then open limewire

I have already re-installed Limewire.
Also, I just tried deleting that folder that you said (the first one worked, thank you), but still, no luck.

Did you check around to find out whether Aliant might be part of the problem??
Turbo Charged Connection
is this bell throttleing 3rd parties gonna affect aliant?? - dslreports.com

And also have a look at their T&C (bandwidth management): Aliant For Your Home - Terms and Conditions

Try changing LW's listening port: In LW tools > options > advanced > firewall config. Change LW's listening port to 65000 (or try any ports in the range of 49152 - 65535) > apply > ok.

Do download speeds get any better if you use LW outside of peak hours? Some providers only throttle at peak times.

For your firewall icon, try port forwarding. The instructions are here.
Port Forwarding for the Siemens Gigaset SE567
You'll need to set up a static IP address first, there's a link to that in the instructions above. LW's listening port, port in the 'manual port forward' box & port forwarded within the router must all be the same number.

Don't run without a firewall - just make that LW's allowed thru your software firewall.

Since you don't really have a connection problem - your LW connects with all 5 bars green - this will be moved into Download/Upload Problems.
