I keep getting a "Trojan" Warning! Please Help!

Hey guys

This is my first post and I hope to get you all a little better soon!

I have a question, I have been trying to download some programs from Limwire with no luck. I've never had problems in the past, but this time when I download a program and attempt to extract the file, my computer blocks it saying a "Trojan" was found. I'll open up the file and it will have "SetUp" Icon, and when I try to extract files from that I get the "Trojan" Warning. Now I know that this can happen more often than not, but it came up on EVERY file from different users.

Even somethings I downloaded in the past, when I went and tried to open them, I got the same "Trojan" alert. Ofcourse I am not trying to infect my computer but I find this odd that this happening on every program download. I do have virus protection, but that's never interfered with my downloading before. BTW, I can download songs just fine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

IMO there're only two types of files that are relativley safe to download from the Gnutella Network. These would be MP3's and AVI's.
AVI's because you can check them with Bitzi.
Downloading Programs, Games, and Images is a very Risky Act as you have experianced. Just Heed the Trojan Warnings and be Thankful that you have'nt become infected.
There're better means of downloading above mentioned File Types, but NOT From the Gnutella Network. :)

Thanks Remoc,

Do you suggest any other place where I can download programs from?

Limewire Viruses

I too experienced viruses originating from the limewire program.
Alot of files in their database are infected.
Had one a while back that McAfee's didn't see. Kept starting limewire
whether I wanted it to or not. Had to IPL my PC.
Now I've been getting alot of them detected as I try to download
music files.
I think Limewire needs to clean up their databases.
Alot of bad stuff in there!

BTW I've even upgraded to version 4.18.3
The JUNK filter doesn't seem to do much.

the dangers of downloading software way too risky,
i would pay the money go to store.
spending money at store out weighs cost headaches of a broken computer we don't use data bases it comes straight other users

There are people who try to discourage p-p by sharing bogus or dangerous files. Don't blame LW; if it wasn't part of an open p-p network it would no longer exist (remember Napster?). Always use Bitzi to check files before downloading.

shockadalite:
I've had a lot of success at C-Net's download.com. Their software is free, and you can read user reviews (often quite helpful). Other good sites: nsa******.com, majorgeeks.com, and don't forget Windows Marketplace (free stuff there, too).

Coffeemug, I think you may need to do a little research here. LW has no central server. Everything that is available for download is from the Gnutella Network and NOT from LW.
LW is nothing more than an avenue or client that gives you the opportunity to download and upload.
Everything that is put on the Network is from members like you and me.
It is your responsibility to do what ever it takes to make sure you don't get bitten by the Bug.
As long as you use LW and or many other Gnutella clients, you will always have the opportunity to get Infected, Spammed, or even download KP if you're not on your toes.
I guess it's the Price you Pay as long as you use P2P.

TRUST NO FILE as SAFE
SCAN EVERYTHING before OPENING
same as you would never trust a stranger in your house (as well as ppl you know)
treat everything if it WAS a virus

Remoc August 10th, 2008 09:18 AM

Absolutly Cooter, This kind of stuff isn't for the "Faint of Heart", and you should trust absolutly nothing or nobody. :nono:

i dont even allow the supper attendants in my apartment alone
reason - w maids stealing stuff in hotels and baggage handlers stealing stuff on planes
i put ALL money hidden

oh yes I NEVER use my real name on net
too many weidos
sad if u think bout it

coffeemug_45 August 10th, 2008 02:21 PM

Thanks for the repy, but FYI i'm not new at the game.
I have been working and using PC's for many many years. I even ran
a BBS before the days of the internet.
My first computer was programmed in binary. Step by step. Word
by word. Yes, I am probably older than most of you.

I am aware that LW is strictly p-p but they DO have a database to
store info on users and files and their origins, etc.
Without a database of some type the system would not know where
to direct you for downloading a file.

You are right though, anyone who downloads .exe, .com, .zip, or other
attachments then opens them without scanning them first is a fool.

Thanks folks for the reply. :xeri_ok1ani:

yup my bbs was COOTMASTER COVE
first on a ivory system w atari like look
a- z commands and * sysop
then went to CNET w awesome look
but by then ui moved and bbs were out
same A-xx commands w zz for sysop

no p2p exactly like a BBS u connected to ANOTHER user
there is no base like you tube for example

as for software ppl rather be foolish downloading exe's then spend $20-50 at a store.

even AVs wouldn't you buy something like a saftybag or on star for your care for protection or insurance?

so spend bit extra buy a av or software
just bc its free doesn't make it worth headache of broken computer safe few dollars

but no ppl want safe a buck and dl everything free expecting it save a few cents

then bam computer is dead

oh ya im 37

coffeemug_45 August 12th, 2008 06:35 AM

Right you are cootmaster. The trojan I got was from when I installed Limewire and ran it for the first time. McAfee's took care of it, but I still think that gnutella should check it out anyway. BTW I d/l Limewire directly from the website; not a 3rd party.

BBS's.... 'those were the days!!!!!!!'

cootmaster August 12th, 2008 08:41 AM

3rd party- BIG TROUBLE
ALWAYS use parent site/download com/ tested site
