Default problems with very slow connection speeds

hi everyone... first time post....

pc: HP media center PC running vista
ISP: j-com (us citizen living in japan)

i have tried to reconfigure my high speed modem, manually change the settings on limewire, and looked through the links to help optimize limewire. i'm still getting 1-3 KB/s download speeds....

i thought that it may have been a comfiguration with vista, so i tried my xp laptop as well. same issue. however, when i go to a wifi hotspot, i get much better download speeds, even with lots of users on the wifi hotspot.

please help. if you need any other information please ask, and i'll do my best to provide it.

By the sounds of it the Wifi is the issue. Bandwidth tends to fluctuate & be unreliable over wireless transmissions (how badly depends on variables of set up & equipment, etc.) Then you also have possible interference between from radio magnetic devices such as lights, electronic devices, etc.

But I am confused. You say Wifi, yet you say you are connected via Cable. So it's a wireless modem/router connected to the cable right?

'If' it is possible to hard wire it ... meaning using ethernet cable instead of wireless, try that & I'm sure you will find your speeds will be fast & reliable. If you find that's the case, you may need to look at possibility of either keeping it connected via ethernet else, looking at a secondary wifi send point closer to where you will use your computer.

Other than that, I am aware there are 'some' Internet providers in Japan that shape p2p sharing bandwidth.

i do not have wifi at my apartment. the only time i do have wifi is if i go to a wifi hotspot in the navy base in yokosuka. that's when i see decent speeds, even with heavy traffic on the network....

Do you see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at bottom of LW?

Did you add LW to exceptions on your Vista firewall?

Some things to try: (a) Problems with the search, __ (b) Hostiles List, __ (c) Under Tools > Options > Sharing > Advanced, set for Partial File Sharing. This will only partially share your next downloads, not your present ones.

The fact your search is working fine but only downloads are slow either sounds like set up, else ISP interference.

Oh another suggestion I forgot, you could try changing connection or/and listening ports to one between the 49152 - 65535 range. But you'd need to adjust your firewall/router if they also have a port setting for LW within them. This range of ports is less likely to be affected by ISP interference, but still no guarantee depending on the isp's filtering technique.

i am turbo charged with no firewall....

vista firewall is on with limewire already as one of the exceptions...

i have already tried to port forward to see if that would help... no change in download performance either.

the only other thing that i can think of doing is to call them directly, and hope someone there speaks english....

if you can think of anything else, please feel free to write back. thanks for your help so far.

You could try a different port for LW. Go to LW's menu bar, Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Firewall, & change both connection & listening ports. Try a port in range 49152 - 65535.

If you are using UPnP however, this may change the port back. UPnP allows LW to communicate directly with the router to open a port for it for listening.

I have a brick wall in front of the world sign on limewire, and I cannot seem to get it off.
I have been downloading the same movie now for 2 hours, and still am only at 20%. Wish now I hadn't bought the pro version, it doesn't download any faster than the free one.

Are you downloading a file from the gnutella network, or a torrent?

Did you check the file with Bitzi before download, to see whether it was ok?
How to use Bitzi
