When I search...am I finding myself?

Hello. I recently removed some spyware, and now I'm finally getting lots of search results - but only from one source. And the source has everything I've already downloaded. And the source can't be "browsed". Is it possible my search is looping back and finding me? Every time I search, I find the same source and same results, and nothing new to download. Thanks for your help.

Okay, now it's the next day, and I've figured out that I AM finding my own IP address when I search. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

mindping June 10th, 2009 07:46 PM

You are finding your own files on the network. Is your Limewire fully connected to the network? (Bottom left bars) Are you sharing files in your Sharing settings that you don't want to be sharing? My first step would be to check the connectivity bars on the bottom left, and if they look solid, I'd disable sharing for all the files you're sharing, quit and restart your computer, and try again. Let us know!

Problem solved!

Thanks for your help! I reduced the number of files I share, and now I don't find myself when I search. I don't find much else, either, but that's another problem. Thanks again!!

This happens occasionally with some people. It has happened to me but only very rarely.

But are you 'sure' it's your own files & not simply spam results in the search results suggesting you already have the file?

If you did a browse & it showed your ip address then yes that suggests the first scenario.
Likewise with mindping, are you sure you are properly connected with the network?

I found it happened to me when LW was unable to find other results. But no idea why it was happening. Which version of LW are you using? Check that LW is not suggesting you are firewalled. You can see option as a brick wall or blue world icon at bottom left of screen for LW 4. Or for LW 5, Tools menu, Advanced, & top left you will see if it says you are firewalled.

Thanks "Lord of the Rings"

I have LW 4.18.8, and it does show a brick wall (firewall). But I have my firewall set to allow LW access. Maybe it's not working the way I expected. Is there something different I should try?

I did a browse, and it did show my IP address, so I was "finding myself". I still do find my own files, but less often because I'm sharing fewer files now.

Thanks for your help!

Ty for the reply. Let's start from the basics: System details - help us to help you (click on blue link) :) I cannot advise without such information. ;)

kobra June 18th, 2009 11:03 PM

Here's the info

1. Windows XP
2. Windows security center firewall...?
3. 2.20 GHz, 448 MB of RAM
4. total physical memory: 457192
5. broadband
6. Modem: Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem
I don't know what a router is, or where to find this info.
7. I'm connecting from home.
8. Limewire 4.18.8. I recently updated Java to the most recent version.
9. ISP: Verizon
10. My test worked.
11. I'm not sharing my computer with others.
12. I've had LW for years...I used to get great results, now I get very few.
13. I do see a brick wall, but according to the Security Center, I have allowed LW as an "exception" in my firewall settings.
14. Unknown.
15. Malwarebytes, Spybot, CCleaner. Sometimes Avast or Adaware, but they take over my computer, so I delete them after use.
16. Sometimes LW completely stops connecting and I have to re-install LW and Java before it will work again. This hasn't happened in about a month, but I did recently update Java. I recently tried Avast and Peer Guardian, but deleted both.

Thanks again!:)

Lord of the Rings June 19th, 2009 03:41 AM

Just as an experiment have you tried totally disabling your XP firewall before you open LW to see if you still have the brick wall icon showing?

There's always this option also but not sure if it will make a difference to connections: http://www.gnutellaforums.com/downlo...downloads.html

kobra June 19th, 2009 05:30 PM

Great ideas!

Thanks for the great info! Do you know of a safe place to download Limewire 4.16? The official site doesn't seem to offer downloads that old.

kobra June 19th, 2009 11:46 PM

P.S.: I tried both suggestions, and they didn't work. The brick wall icon didn't go away when I connected to LW with the firewall disconnected, and switching to 4.16 also didn't help. Plus, when I switched to 4.16 I couldn't get the 5 connections I get with LW pro.

I search for the same words each day, because I'm learning a language and searching for audio books in that language. I only get a few results, and I'm always finding my own files.

Lord of the Rings June 20th, 2009 12:05 AM

Remove LW from the firewall listing & then re-add. Make sure it has both TCP & UDP clearance. :)

I am wondering if the issue might be related to the Motorola SM56. After a google there does appear to be some issue with drivers & settings for some people. That's an old modem from what I can gather.

kobra June 20th, 2009 04:30 PM

I realized something surprising....my computer lists my modem as Motorola SM56, but it has a red X through it. I actually use a Verizon (Webtel) modem, but it's not listed under "My Computer". Is it possible it's not configured right? I'm clueless.

Lord of the Rings June 20th, 2009 05:13 PM

Very possible. Can you find out more about it possibly? Such as model?

Peerless June 20th, 2009 09:02 PM

a Motorola SM56 is an internal modem and needs associated drivers to work....is this piece of hardware presently in your machine?

since it is software driven I'm not sure how one would go about removing it...I would guess one would uninstall it via add or remove programs in the control panel and then go to network devices and remove it there also (if needed..this would be done by double clicking it, choosing properties, then uninstall)...I suspect it used to be in that machine (get it used?) and it was simply removed without the proper removal of the software...

only an internal modem like this would show up in your OS...an external modem like most of us use will not be seen via that route...not sure if a conflict like this is causing you the grief, but you never know...

I know, I sound like a broken record, but try out PeerGuardian2....keep it updated, and see if that makes any sort of difference...you just might be getting so much heat from Airline Reservations.com, Inc., Brand Asset Digital and Core Express that you are getting some type of weird ping backs on yourself...

I guess it's a Westell 6100 modem (based on a Google result)...on the modem itself it says: E90-610085-06 DSL2+router.

Lord of the Rings June 21st, 2009 12:20 AM

Port forward? Westell devices are generally best port forwarded in our experiences:

1. First & most important step, must get this step right & do it first: Setting up Static ip address for Windows XP

2. PortForward.com - Free Help Setting up Your Router or Firewall & find your model on far right of page. Else use this one Port Forwarding Limewire on the Westell E90-610030-06

I got the computer brand new, and it apparently has a Motorola SM56 modem inside which isn't functioning anymore (I assume, because of the red "X" in system info). Do you think it's important to remove it? And is it definitely safe to remove it?

I tried PeerGuardian2, and I still have the setup files. It didn't seem to be helping, only using up memory, so I deleted it. But I'll try it again. Thanks for your help.

Peerless June 21st, 2009 01:07 AM

safe is relative....have you ever worked on the insides of a box before? if you have, then yeah, its safe....if you're a virgin at such things then it might not be 'safe'...should be pretty simple...

but...upon doing a little research it seems this modem is a fax modem, not an internet connection modem....

soooo...your problems shouldn't be associated with this...DOH!

Internal Fax/Modem

Kobra

Just as Peerless says, it is extremely unlikely that your internal fax modem (aka dial-up modem) has any effect on your current setup.

I still use my internal dial-up modem to send faxes, not to connect to the Internet. For Internet connection I use a multi-user modem router, the Speedtouch 585.

Back to your problem, the reason why you have a "red X" marked in Device Manager for your dial-up modem is because the software drivers for it are not installed and so it is totally inoperative and has no affect in or on your PC. You will not achieve any benefit from removing this modem from your motherboard, other than to risk causing damage to your computer.

As for PeerGuardian, it is an IP blocker and stops Government Agencies (and their associates), various computer companies, local city and area authorities, known malware distributors, etc. from accessing your PC while you are using Limewire.

Unfortunately, when you configure your PC to use Limewire, by port forwarding and amending your firewall, you also enable a whole host of other organisations (both good and bad) to access your PC as well. PeerGuardian blocks some of those organisations.

As for me and Limewire, I no longer use it because there is a government backed campaign in the UK, and across Europe, against the use P2P software. And along with the various laws and snooping powers that have been recently enacted it just isn't worth it anymore.

One more question, if I may.... do you know anything about the following?:

searchindexer.exe
searchprotocolhost.exe

They suddenly appeared in my Task Manager and now I can't use my computer's search function. Could this be interfering with LW?

kobra June 24th, 2009 10:45 PM

I just noticed something else that's screwy: When other people upload files from me, they usually don't get 100%, and quite often they get cut off because "upload limit is reached". BUT: I set the upload limit per person at 300! So I doubt they've reached it, and I wonder why they don't get 100% of my files. I'm sure this is somehow related to my problem with finding very few search results.

I tried getting a fixed IP address, but then couldn't get LW or internet to work. I'll look into this further to see what I did wrong, but that was scary for me...

This can be related to your overall upload slots with LW 4. Thus per person might be set to 300 per person but if the overall upload slots is 5 for example & there are lots of people trying to get a spot in your uploads then eventually you may see that message. Or vice-versa, lots of upload slots but only a couple per person when they try to download many from you. I occasionally even see Banned Greedy Client when they've tried to download 100's or even 1000's of files from me at once lmao  (this only bans them for that session & still some in the queue may continue at some stage.)

People's downloads from you stopping might be due to a number of reasons. For example, someone else uploading from you steals most of the bandwidth leaving little or zero for one or two others. I see that happening frequently. I wish there was something I could do about it but unfortunately not. I also noticed LW 5 uploaders tending to stop more frequently than LW 4 users uploading from me whilst I'm using LW 4.

I have no idea about those files you mentioned in the previous post. Try a google for searchindexer. A couple articles suggested it belongs to Vista. Here's one article searchindexer.exe utilizing near 100% CPU usage; suggestions from this forum tried to no avail and another File Information - How to remove SearchIndexer.exe error problem
