Useless FAQs I have just upgraded to LimeWire Pro and it has killed all downloading. Still uploading at 60KB/s+ from my library built up on LW Basic and it shows the files I want to download. Runnung an iMac 20 with Core 2 Duo OS X 10.5.8 20Mb/s broadband. Turbo-Charged Connection showing but 0@0 KB/s down. Status 'Need more sources' so tried 'sources' and other key words in FAQ searches but never any results found. What use is the FAQ if it does not even use the same terminology as LimeWire itself? Most of the questions are 'Is it safe to give my cat dog food?' or some equally useless bit of info. Anybody know how to get LimeWire working properly again? |

Reasons the files might have 'Need More Sources' status? (1) This is a status shown in LW 4, not LW 5 which uses different terms. The official LW site FAQ mostly only refers to LW 5 now. (2) The person with the original file might be offline. (3) The person with the file may have all their upload slots busy. (4) The person with the file might not be reachable. (5) The file might be fake or worse. The Resume/Find More sources function is not especially great. I suspect it only attempts to find addresses of those that LW was either previously downloading from or previously found in search results. (Keeping in mind dynamic ip addresses.) Solutions? Best one is to manually re-search the file. Then use the Get More Results option by Control-clicking on the search tab. Also try varying your searches. When possible, try at different times of day. I'm guessing you are using either LW 4.18 or 4.16. |
PC or Mac I am running LW 4.18 on an iMac20 with Core 2 Duo & OpSys 10.5.8 LW 4.18 appeared to be my only option for a Mac. Wrong? Torrents found on PirateBay downloaded quickly and easily until 'upgrading' to LW Pro 2 days ago. Bb 20Mb/s which never drops below 18. Sorted out trouble getting any connection up or down. Now Turbo. But absolutely nothing from torrents reloaded from my Downloads or Incomplete folder left over from Basic or trying new fresh torrents. Should I dump Pro and revert to Basic? Or would the problem transfer? Any other suggestion while staying on Pro now that it is running nicely? PS The Mac is my "firewall' and excellent for the web but I hate its opsys and transfer files to PCs to work on them. Could live dangerously and connect PC to web but only as last resort. |
Limewire does not track share ratios - one of the reasons it is banned from some torrent sites. You would be better off using Vuze or uTorrent (both are free). |
Sorted I think you have resolved my problem. When on LW Basic I remember seeing figures for Ratio, whatever that is, but on LW Pro there is no sign of it so presumably PirateBay has kicked me off. Nice one LimeWire a complete waste of time upgrading to a downgrade. No problem about the cost of a 12 month sub. Just use it as a contribution to putting Ratio on to Pro so it works properly. Back to Basic hoping LW will not mess that up too. |
LW Basic does not track share ratios. The ability to download torrents was apparently thrown in to save people from having to install a torrent client just to grab a few files. |
Whatever the reason, I managed to get Basic running and all went well for a while but despite getting rid of all I could of Pro, its icon would not go to trash. Having clicked on the Pro icon the wretched thing bounced back again and both appeared to be running but again it had killed torrents for both. At least in this weather [UK] it keeps me at home in the warm. |
