uploading question

:( Hello, I am completely new at using Limewire. I started to download and I noticed after about 10 minutes that the program was auto uploading. The problem I have is this is my work computer with lets say confidential information on it and now I think I have a problem.... is my stuff out in Limewire world for anyone to look at??? If so is there any way to get it back...I know I must sound dumb but I am very worried....Thankyou

Greetings bingogirl,

Welcome to the Gnutella forums!

By default, portions of files that you are downloading (your Incomplete folder) are being shared with other users. Completed downloads are also shared by default. You can see which directories (folders) are being shared by Limewire (I think it's under the options tab). You're probably sharing only those two folders.

Anything sent out over the Internet cannot be gotten back. Even e-mails leave copies on servers, etc. Once it's out there, it's virtually there to stay.

Hello Blackhorse 70V,

Thankyou for your response.

What I noticed on the monitor tab was that specific files from my laptop where being uploaded (eg work files that I personally named) without my permission. I hit the stop upload cross. This stopped it. I looked around and changed the settings to the slowest upload speed and it appears to have stopped it.

I know I sound naive but how can they do this. I understand what you said about what I had downloaded and completely agree with this. But it appeared that people where scanning my computer and pulling information back.

I went and searched for the specific file names I saw going up and they were on limewire in some various formats. I then decided to search for some strange file names I have created and they were also on limewire.

How can I isolate all of my files so that they will not be pulled back if I changed the setting on uploads back to the default settings. I have a modem, router, broadband and nortons.

Thankyou for you help so far:sos:

It is very important to know which version of LW you are using.

For LW 5.2 or later, the only files shared are the ones in your Public Shared list. Click on My Files -> Public Shared tab & that will show you. (Any file you do not wish to share, right-click & choose stop sharing.)

As for finding ridiculous search results, that is a kind of auto-spam. Virus thread: Typical virus spam file sizes - Make a note of them (click on blue link to see) & also see How to find music

Personally I would never install a filesharing app, with shares, on a work laptop for multiple reasons, but since this is what you like doing, then you should definitely familiarize yourself with all the options in Limewire.

In your case specifically all options pertaining to what files other may have access to. Pay special attention to if you are sharing a folder, with any subfolders, that you aren't planning on sharing. or even make a separate partition for Limewire files (downloaded ones, incompletes and personal shares).

Limewire on a work computer

Bingogirl

I wholeheartedly agree with Sleepless, that is LW should never be installed on a work computer because apart from the security risk you could also lay yourself open to disciplinary procedures.

Therefore, I would strongly suggest that you uninstall LW from your work machine and install it on your own PC/Laptop.
