Salut pawelsz, while Phex is a nice cross plaform aternative, it is no where as advanced as the LimeWire project (and I'm talking about the network core, the one that matters for the health of Gnutella).

While I support Phex devs and I'm happy that they work to maintain viable alternatives, the LimeWire project is the one who is the most complete tested Gnutella client.

Phex is certainly not ready yet to overtake LimeWire or even the first version of FrostWire. However, it let advanced users more control over the app, so it's possible userbase isn't the same as FW or LW.

I wish the best to Phex team and I hope all the open source java Gnutella clients continue working together (hehe, that means LW, FW and Phex).

If you want to help the Phex project, any enthousiast can work on their wiki http://phex.kouk.de/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

That's the goal of FW, that was also for LW, but since they are a corporation and the RIAA is stoopid....

So is LW and FW

On that point, we'll all agree that LW is much more mature, FW will get to LW level quite soon

Freedom of users is the goal of FW, no software should think for their users

Well since FW and LW are GPL, get the source and compile, voilą!

LW is 100% under Softpedia and so will FW

Ciao

nice points, and good job et voilą

I've been wondering a little why we don't all just join Phex, since so much of the infrastructure is in place and the GregorK's work has been respectable.

Still, I wonder if GregorK prefers to work on his own mostly, because I'm not aware that he has had much to do with the GDF or LW.org He's had lots of opportunity to encourage many of us to switch in the last few years, but doesn't seem that interested in handling hordes of inexperiencedusers.

FrostWire should be able to help more of the average LimeWire users, but I hope all the open source gnutella developers can continue to build the best open information sharing network.

Good to see Phex has some passionate posters. ;)

Well, personally, I believe most people want to aim a little higher than phex in terms of usability and looks of the interface and quality of the underlying software.

It didn't even connect when I tried to run it and showed a number of display errors.

And go easy on posting large images!

Though I really like it that we have such great fans... go pawelsz go...
...it will never be the intention of the Phex team to overtake LW or FW...

Rather we prefer to work together and offer an alternative to LW and FW.

But of course if anyone of you like to join the Phex team or help out here or there, I would be very happy to welcome him. It's not that I prefer to work on my own. It just seems to be not that attractive to work on a smaller project where you have more influence on the team and your contribution weights much more. ;)

Also I'm just not the guy who likes to do big marketing or who praise the product all over others. I just like to develop good software and if users like, fine.

The reduced GDF presence of Phex has certainly something to do with there very unfriendly and offending talk with members at the beginning of the project (early 2001). Sure we did something wrong, but we also fixed it quickly and made sure we comply. Well but I guess most of you know that the atmosphere can get rough there.

Though I would also welcome inexperienced users and help them as good as I can, Phex is basically aimed towards the advanced user, by trying to display more about the insides and allow to adjust how things work.

Im all confused on RIAA-free thing. i thought RIAA can bust anyone with any kind of platform.....

"RIAA-Free Limewire Clone"... is this a joke?? or seriously?

Only A Hobo October 15th, 2005 02:43 PM

Not A Joke

One of the As in RIAA stands for America ( Well to be politically correct USA) ... you can work out for yourself what the other A stands for:)

Frostwire is not based in USA but is closely related to Limewire. The story is fairly long so I suggest you read the following thread, which will, I think explain what's going on.
