I'm sorry to interrupt the happy search for a new logo. This is because it's not the first and I'm slowly getting a little upset.

First, there was a contest in which many participated and good ideas and logos were contributed. Despite the fact that someone won the vote, the logo was never really used.
Some days after the contest, a different logo appeared on the page and suddenly, the contest and its outcome was just ignored.

I asked the people who are in charge of the development and they said something about that they were not that satisfied with the logo and one of the contestants who seems to be member of the team now made the new one.

Now, there seems to be the need for a new logo. Again.

And again, the efforts and time of the people who contributed in the first contest is simply ignored.

Now I ask you: Why don't you look at the ideas and logos the contestants gave you in the first place? Why are these ignored without any comment? What do you say to the people who thought that helping an upcoming project like frostwire would be a good thing?

Yes, I did participate in the first contest and my logo made it to the top five. But I don't ask these questions only for myself but for at least the other 4 top contestants and furthermore the dozen of people who made logos which made it not that far.
I ask these questions because I think what's going on at the moment is a slap in the face for the ones that wanted to help.

If you don't want any help, then *say it*! But don't let people believe that there is any chance that their effort is of any use, if in reality there ain't!

et voilà March 19th, 2006 08:55 PM

Cyphem, there is no "real" need for a new logo, but if one is better we'll choose it since it will be better for the project no matter what.

I'm tired of you telling that there has been a contest and that we should stick to it -- we used the winner logo. Then, there was something better, so we used it. Get over it. As much as I'm tired of Alkalinex's desire for a new logo while the website is what is need to work on, I do not see positivism on your side. This is an open source and community project, the community has to build up (and as of last news, since we are not paid, we got a have fun doing it). One way is to lure some people for art, some for programming and others for translations, support and all.

The show must go on. Someone not having fun or interest with any of his activity sphere on an OSS project should do something else. Let us have fun even if it is redundant.

So, people love art, let them express what art they see FW with and lets all have fun doing it! ;)

I'm glad I no longer use dial up, but it still takes me time to load up these pages. lol :D Nice works by the way! ;)

How about the prize for the winner being a free copy of FrostWire. hahaha :D

Thanks for the explanation et voilà, I was also a little confused. I'm not surprised this could be misinterpreted. After all there were some great efforts initially & people obviously put a lot of time into them. If there really is being reconsideration for new icons, logos, etc. then perhaps it should be made aware to the greater population of FW users. ;) But if this is simply some fun with some slight consideration ... then let the children play. :D

@ cyphem

If you wish to post your previous or new works, you can post it at your own leisure. We will take all art posted or sent to us into consideration. We also *GREATLY* appreciate the support, time and effort that each artist puts into his work. The reason I am wanting a new design (or designer) is that we could not contact the current artist on a regular basis. We would like to have a consistant graphics designer, but the turn-over of developers and artists are very high in the OSS world. We can't keep a design when we cant keep in touch with the artist because many things in the application are constantly changing and we constantly need new or updated graphics. (I've been updating them myself ever since we lost contact with the artist)

As et_voila previously said, we are an open source project, and we need the support of the community to move ahead. We do have an archive of graphics that have been submitted to us and if we lose contact with the designer, we look into our archive and try to find suitable graphics. If we lose contact with a designer that we pick from this thread, we will look into our archives and try to find a suitable graphic and contact the author.

At this time, we can't contact our graphics artist, so after a period of time (and email bounce messages) we have to move on. I am really hoping that it wont happen this time round.

I havent yet decided how the project will choose the artist. Maybe we could do a forum poll for the top picks? Then each top 3(?) graphic will get there 15 mins of fame and be added to each new version of frostwire... So, each new version that comes out, a new top 3(?) pick will take the place of the previous graphic. Then let the community pick which one they like most. Maybe we could do that?

And when do you think, you are done with the search for a logo? Do you think it's good for the project if you change your face from week to week?

wtf?

Can you say 'ignorance'?

No ****.

Could this possibly be because all my enthusiasm and work I put in the project in the first place was - by different actions - just swept away?

So you're stating that if ppl don't find your actions funny they should just leave. Or do you state that, even if people had fun contributing to this project, when it comes to problems they should ignore them and keep on putting energy into a project which couldn't care less?

Oh, *that's* how you see it. Let's goof around, make some graphics, ignore them, have fun, haha.
You know what? When THIS is what you think is helping an upcoming project is all about, then good night to FW. I want to enjoy working on this thing too.
But just imagine what it looks like if we switched positions. Imagine you are contributing a module which you wrote and which would in your eyes improve the whole software.
You then upload it to a CVS or something and maybe there is even a vote if it is good and then suddenly someone deletes it. You ask why but you get no answer. Some weeks later, the project leaders search for a person who is supposed to code a module just like you did.

Wouldn't you feel like: OMGWTF!?

And what would you think if then someone tells you he's tired of reading your complaints and tells you to get over it. I guess then you'd go OMGWTFBBQ! or you would just turn away and let the project go to hell.

Let me clarify two things though: I know that my example doesn't represent the exact situation I'm complaining about. But the main issue is the same. The other point is, that I certainly don't think that I do the best logos or that the project would fail without my contributions. Hell no! I even think there are better designers out there.

But my point is that just goofing around, doing something redudant, ignoring other peoples work and effort will just NOT bring the project to something the people who worked on it, could be proud of.
You want to be a substitute for limewire? Then stop ******* around with the help you get offered and integrate the ppl as best as you can.

That's good to hear. Unfortunately this is the first time one could get the impression that at least someone cares.

This is very well understandable and not the problem. If there are problems with a logo (let it be no contact to the designer, legal issues like copyrights or whatnot) I'm the last one to complain about a logo switch.

Absolutely ACK.
The only problem is when a support from the community - like in this case - is not really accepted or taken for granted.
To me it seems like the logos and ideas offered were not good enough from your PoV. No problem with that. But you could have told the people or make an announcement or something like that where the people get the feeling that even if their work is not chosen, their efforts are at least not ignored.
You say thank you to the contributing coders, don't you? And when their stuff has to be improved, you don't ignore the work done before but try to develop it, don't you?

Well, the decision of what is best should be either done by people who know how a project like FW should be represented and which have knowledge to see potential problems or opportunities in a logo and whom not decide only by aesthetics.
Or you let the community decide which can always be a problem due to eventually not participating members, hence no real representation or support for logos due to support for the people behind the logo which will not lead to the best objective solution.

What way you as the project leaders choose is up to you. But I really think that changing the logo from week to week should not be an option. If you want to create a brand you need consistency! The current actions are the exact opposite of that.
Maybe the splash could change from release to release. But the logo should not.

I'm glad though, that there are still people who understand my points.
Thanks for listening.

cyphem are you a Politician! a simple answer now, and then for us simple folk please!

Lord of the Rings March 23rd, 2006 03:17 AM

Thanks ultracross or et voilà for updating the FrostWire site about this issue. I'm guessing it was et voilà judging by the simultaneous editing of the thread. :)

What answer do you want? Are there any questions I did not see?

Greetings and thanks for making this a new thread, it was not that appropriate from me to post in the logo thread.

et voilà March 23rd, 2006 09:23 AM

I split the thread LODR ;)

Anyhow, I won't loose my time answering Cyphem. I explained myself well enough in my frist post.

Just FYI we talked to Cyphem on Frostwire IRC channel, email, and frostwire.com wiki before.
