How Do I Know What I've Shared?

File Sharing scares the crap out of me. I tried to configure it just for mp3s but I don't trust it.

Are there any logs in LimeWire or FrostWire that show me EXACTLY what files have been uploaded?

Thanks!

Well, your personal log would be your shared folder(s). Only those files in there can be downloaded from other users.
But there is no specific recording system displaying which file has been shared.
You might fear that other users download files that are outside the folders offered from you to share,.......but that's not possible.

Thanks for responding. But under TOOLS >>> OPTIONS >>> SHARED >>> SHARED FOLDERS there's only this: C:\Documents and Settings\default\Shared

and there are NO files in that folder. I use another for my downloads. Yet in the first 10 minutes of running FrostWire some 36 files were uploaded... or beginning to be uploaded, at least according to the green indicator at the bottom left.

So are the files in that OTHER folder being shared?

Are you talikng about those here (look me screenshot).
If so, those are the amount of files you're sharing.
Click the Library tab and look there what other files and folders you're sharing.(see screenshot 2).

I was going by the number in the green oval in your first screenshot. When I go to the LIBRARY >>> SHARED >>>> there something called INDIVIDUALLY SHARED FILES... and they seem to be the ones I was DOWNLOADING at the time. Yup there's 36.

But is the green oval indicator for files I've shared... am willing to share, or files that have been uploaded?

There's another reason I distrust P2P is that I've found personal files that users would probably NEVER want to share. So that's made me VERY cautious. What do they have configuered wrong that permits that?

BTW to date my only P2P experience has been with LW which I installed a few days ago... and FW which I just installed this morning.

Once in the past you have been asked whether you want also to share downloaded files (that's why the 36 files). You have agreed to do so, hence any file you download will increase the amount in the oval window.
People sharing personal files might have done so because they haven't read the user manual of LW (as you seem not to have):
http://www.limewire.com/english/content/userguide.shtml
They might have accidentally put their "My Documents" folder on the list of files they wanted to share.

A personal note,.....if your desire for certain files for free is greater than your safety concerns, then you should maybe consider not to participate in P2P filesharing.........especially if you're in the US.

I reset everything back to default settings and started from scratch. Now I know how it works. Thanks for the link to the manual!

Actually I found where LW logs our uploads. It's in LIBRARY but you have to open an UPLOADS column then sort the column so the uploaded files appear on the top. You can do this for each folder in SHARED FILES. It shows uploads as a fraction or ratio... such as 1/1 or 3/4. I assume the first is the number of successful uploads and the second is the number of attempts.

We can see files being uploaded in real time if we open up the MONITOR tab in
VIEW >> SHOW/HIDE.

They will automatically disappear unless you have UNchecked the clear option in TOOLS >> OPTIONS >> UPLOADS.

At this point I don't know if any of this data survives the program shutting down.

You're right, the first upload figure shows the number of successful uploads & the second, the number of attempted uploads.

The data's not retained after restarting LW.
