FrostWire connection Prob.
 

I had LimeWire for about 8 months, very satisfied with it.
I use it at work. I work next to a Hospital that has a strong wireless connection that I surf off of. Never had any problems downloading all day long, even with the lil brick wall at bottom. But I tried upgrading to 4.12.6 but had problems with it. So someone suggested removing old version and downloading new version. Which I tried with no success.
So I tried FrostWire just for a change.
Had more success but no connection.
I'm using windows XP
Windows and Norton firewalls

1. Disable your XP firewall; go to the control panel, double click on Windows Firewall, check the disable box. Two software firewalls will give you less, not more security. And besides, XP firewall 'does' clash with Norton FW & cause problems.

2. Configure Norton firewall. Have a look at these (a) Configuring Norton Internet Security, & also (b) Reconfiguring Norton Firewall

3. Not sure what you can do about the wireless NAT firewall as almost all wireless devices do have such firewalls. But if configuring your software firewall is good enough, then perhaps this can be ignored as you had before. ;)

Still can't solve this.
 

Hello. I've been reading all these threads and still cannot solve this problem.
I'm using Windows 98 SE (it doesn't has firewalls), 196 RAM, 700 Mb free and connected throw broadband.
I have Norton System Works 2001 (it has no firewalls). Passed the test at http://www3.limewire.com:6346/ ('Your test worked!'). The company server insist they aren't blocking the program ports.
When connect FW I see a brick wall in front of the blue world icon at the bottom of FW's interface and never goes away. Always trying to connect and only the first (smallest) bar is in green. The rest are in red. Two months ago I could use FW without any problems. I don't know what else to do. Thanks for some help!

I've had frostwire and limewire for a very long time, both working fine around my windows and mcafee firewalls; i also had SBC Yahoo DSL; my computer is connected wirelessly to a modem elsewhere in the house. We switched to cable, and nothing seemed to change except neither limewire nor frostwire will connect. I've turned off my windows and mcafee firewall, and it still detects a firewall and won't connect. does anyone have any idea with what's going on with that?

Who is your cable provider (ISP)?

More than likely it is something to do with your connection device. Most wireless devices have internal NAT firewalls. If it supports UPnP then LW & FW will be able to communicate directly with the device to open the port they need. But if it doesn't then port forwarding would probably be required. What devices are you using now (brand & model number)?
Did the device come with a manual?

I'm using the same wireless modem as I did with DSL, so I wouldn't think that would be a problem unless it's the main modem that has the internal firewall. I don't think I have a manual for either modem. What is "port forwarding"?

NAT means it blocks incoming (can mean outgoing also) for certain ranges of ports. So port forwarding means telnetting into the device via your browser, & making special rules to allow passage through particular ports. Port forwarding is very common for games & video conferencing, both which usually require many ports to be opened. LW & FW only need a single port opened. Or one for each if you use them at the same time.

How can I do it?

The most important step is the 1st which is setting up a static ip. Without a static ip the pf won't work after your ip changes.

However, if your model is listed there, find the instructions & how to telnet into it with your browser, see if there's any UPnP options. If yes, then enable it & that will save you port forwarding. 'My' router is port forwarded because it doesn't support UPnP.

As previously suggested, UPnP will enable LW/FW to communicate directly with the device to open a port when these programs are opened. But also, not all UPnP implementations are reliable. Some brands use different UPnP technology. Almost a little like VHS v's Beta videos. lol :D
