HELP! Can't Delete Mpeg.

I have Frost Wire 4.13.2. I have a SeaGate external hard drive which i use to store all my music, movies, etc. I have 2 Incomplete MPEGS which when I try to delete them, there is no option to delete. I cannot drag to recycling bin or anything. I downloaded a program earlier called Delinvfile which worked once, but now when i try to use it, the file says Unreadable or corrupt. I've tried everything. It does not show up on FrostWire in the Incomplete folder either.

hey there! i downloaded the lastest frostwire but no luck.

the problem is....In my INCOMPLETE folder in my EXTENAL HARDDRIVE, there site a MPEG which when I RIGHT CLICK, gives me only 5 choices (open with, send to, etc) which none will work in. It's like its nailed there and I can't move it.

I assume you have rebooted and then tried deleting it....

try reconfiguring your frostwire so the incompletes folder is located elsewhere...and of course I hope you haven't been trying to delete whilst FW is running....after reconfiguring FW to have a different saved folder location, shut it down just for giggles, then delete the whole old incomplete folder....

AaronWalkhouse July 28th, 2008 03:16 PM

Aside from the possibility that the disk itself is at fault,
here's another utility that might help: Unlocker

If that still doesn't cut it grab the Seagate software on your install CD or get it from
their site and scan your disk for errors. Even if you did use normal disk repair
software, the Seagate stuff is still probably the only one that has direct access to
the hardware.

AaronWalkhouse July 28th, 2008 03:31 PM

Yeah, temp folders always way too busy for an external drive anyway. Frostwire will
definitely work better on your fastest drive for incompletes and then it can move
completed files out to the external drive, defragmenting them both naturally, or at
least reducing fragmentation a lot. ;]

nickd818 July 28th, 2008 03:57 PM

thanks but...

ive tried literally EVERYTHING, even the Unlocker, tons of programs. the Delinvfile worked on others, but this one file will not move! and it only started when i started saving the frostwire files to my seagate. i will try to find the seagate cd's, but have no idea where they are. The UNLOCKER program doesnt even show up when i right click the MPEG. there are only the 5 usual options, nothing more.

nickd818 July 28th, 2008 03:58 PM

even if I delete Frostwire or change folders, that incomplete file still sits there.

cootmaster July 28th, 2008 03:59 PM

nick id try frostwire forum see if they know
or #support room
im usually there w the guys

Peerless July 28th, 2008 04:04 PM

have you tried deleting the whole folder as I suggested?

nickd818 July 28th, 2008 04:40 PM

yes, trust me...ive tried all of these things. i can't delete any folder which contains things that contain folders which contain this MPEG. when i use the Delinvfile there is a yellow triangle with an "!" in it that says

-Corrupt FIle
The file or directory H:\blah blah is corrupt and unreadable. please run the chkdsk utility.

it may be more difficult since its on the external hard drive. i cannot do anything on this in safemode. ive already tried. it cant be opened, renamed, moved, etc.

Peerless July 28th, 2008 05:05 PM

then follow AW's advice and download the disk diagnostic/repair utilities from seagate

nickd818 July 28th, 2008 05:16 PM

thanks

i just reformatted the drive, wiped it out. problem solved :-)

Peerless July 28th, 2008 05:42 PM

lol...yes, that certainly will solve that particular problem...

as a note external drives are substandard to those directly connected to your MoBo...USB are real bad...though firewire has a transfer rate good enough to get by when using for pro audio recording...i.e. I would use the external as storage and move files there once completed and verified...

also, it would be a good idea to run chkdsk on that drive even though you just reformatted it...and I hope you formatted it to NTFS....

cootmaster July 28th, 2008 05:45 PM

my H is external
ONLY used for back up bc stuff can be slowed or clogged in the usb
i dont have it on all time

AaronWalkhouse July 29th, 2008 01:10 AM

If you ever have to repair or rescan it you can take it out of the case and put the
drive into any working computer, then boot a SpinRite CD and you can even
recover damaged data.

Just in case you need to know.

It can work through USB but it is slower.

Though you might be tempted to just leave it in there
and run it at full speed from now on. ;]

Peerless July 29th, 2008 02:02 PM

if you really want bad performance try doing a file transfer from and to 2 external USB drives....sheeshus...

nickd818 - Unless I missed it somewhere in those two pages, I didn't see any mention of your having tried re-naming the file, then deleting/erasing it - did you?

I know the problem's already "solved", I'm just curious as to whether you tried that or not since it's worked out well for me quite a few times when I couldn't get files to delete. Pete

AaronWalkhouse August 4th, 2008 09:25 PM

When you cannot delete a file you usually cannot rename it either.
Those are cases when some software or the OS has a handle on
the file and can't or won't let go. Malformed media files can cause
this to happen, which is why we usually assume that is the cause.

Malformed filenames or disk structure errors are very rare in
contrast to the usual problem and that's where a rename can help.
