Mirror 1: via SaberCat here or via MediaFire here. (Easiest options!)
Mirror 2: From a GoogleDrive folder here. GoogleDrive instructions here using LW as an example.
Mirror 3: FrostWire versions, choose from a folder. But you need to be registered at 4Shared to download from this folder. Be very wary of download links except those that say free download.

If the .NetworkShare folder inside FrostWire preferences folder should add a file for share it...You can easy disable the sharing of the file by click "Library" and go to the left side of FrostWire and click on "Individually Shared Files"...You should find the file there and click on the file for so choose "Stop Sharing file" and thats all to do!:rolleyes_2:

If you can't find the FrostWire prefereces folder, use this trick here:

Click on "Start" and click on "Run", now copy and past this code here:

Code:

%APPDATA%\FrostWire
Then click "OK" ,now you are inside in the FrostWire preferences folder!

VIP Info: If you see in connections window of FrostWire this client here LimeWire 4.21.1 (rc), just remove it before you do any search because it is a spam bot! Likewise for any LimeWire 5.1.2

Lord of the Rings November 8th, 2010 11:34 AM

wow I agree to no auto-update. Such a dangerous tool. We saw what happened with LimeWire & its auto-updating tool after LW 5.5.10.

And who needs or wants advertising or toolbars especially without their permission installed on their system. Some people or companies sell themselves out. Does anybody care about the client users hey ! ? :D

Getting marketing phone calls from early morning to evening & even on weekends. hmm why does it remind me of the 'unclean' FrostWire they offer at their site. Glad to see a clean version. ;)

File_Girl71 and Lord of the Rings

Although I no longer user P2P as I used to back in the old days, I still like to dabble occasionally with Frostwire.

So, I think I will download this, when I get home tonight, and give it a try.

Tell me, do either of you guys know if this new installation of FW will overwrite my old version but keep my current settings?

UK Bob

Lord of the Rings November 9th, 2010 06:55 AM

It should keep your old settings yes. But will probably uninstall your previous FW program. ;) BTW you will get an update notice about a newer version, click cancel on it. At least it does not auto-update without your permission. :)

Auto-update is such a scary tool. God knows what the newer version may have in it, also what bugs. This applies to any program. I often like to check user feedback reports about the updates on some programs before 'choosing' to update. Especially if it's professional software I work with for a living.

File_Girl71 November 9th, 2010 12:39 PM

I don't think my installer would uninstall your old version of FrostWire by default, but it will use your setting where the preferences folder is on your system! If you install the new version on the same directory and same plase where you have the old one it will only overwrite it if the files in my installer is newer then the FW you have installed before...What you can do is take a backup of the old version before you install the new one, so you could easy restore the old one with out have to install it again so to speak!

ukbobboy01 November 9th, 2010 11:48 PM

File_Girl71 and Lord of the Rings

Guys, thanks for your info, I will install the bundle free version of FW over my current version.

I'll let you know if it goes wrong.

UK Bob

PS. File_Girl71, I may still do a backup before performing the installation.

BTW, you're miss understanding the "auto-update" feature. It's more of a "auto-download-the-installer" feature. The user can decide wether or not to start the installer.

What is wrong with the usual optional "available update" notifications, which thousands upon thousands of programs have no trouble using?

gubatron November 27th, 2010 11:26 AM

It's always had one like that but a lot of people get lost into going to frostwire.com and downloading the installer.

What we can do to address any of the concerns of auto downloading and helping seed the installer is to put an opt-out setting

[x] Auto download the latest installer for me

If they have that off, they'll just keep getting the old message where they can manually go and download the installer from the website.

Gnutella Forum Troll November 27th, 2010 11:53 AM

Since FW closely followed LW's code, did it include the same auto-update features which could potentially be turned around at any point in time to do what FW wanted (under pressure from ...) After all, this is one of the concerns. Auto-update could easily be turned into an update into anything, might even end up installing lemons or elephants or RIAA remote controlled items or other spy items.

Below is LW's forced update, user had no choice other than to force quit the program. Changing from voluntary to forced update is obviously easily possible with the program update code / concept you have put in. Users will become accustom to it without realising the potential dangers, until one day suddenly, their program is hijacked & no longer works because FW was forced to give them a non working program. That kind of control I'm sure most users would prefer to keep to themselves rather than have it forced upon them. Choice of updating should be up to user, if they wish to stay with v. 4.x then they should have option to turn off update messages. Nobody likes nags on programs.

I must say, I am highly confused as to where to find the Update preferences in Frostwire 4.21. Where is it hidden may I ask?
(obviously not in same locations as LW 4 or 5. LW had a special preferences location for update preferences.)

http://www.gnutellaforums.com/attach...lw-closing.gif

BTW if what I suggested is incorrect, then my apologies but the gnutella community needs to be clear on this. Is FW setting themselves up without realising?

gubatron November 27th, 2010 07:51 PM

nothing like that has been implemented on FW.

I'm sure the LW folks had to be aware of such dangers... they had some of the smartest people I've ever known in that company.

File_Girl71 November 29th, 2010 12:06 AM

We have to see if FW going to shoot them self in the foot like LW did with Auto Update function. Because FW think user can't find FW site for downloading FW installer...Are people really that stupid as you say they are? I just wonder that's all!

shapeshifter910 December 9th, 2010 03:31 AM

Thanks File_Girl71
You wouldn't happen to have a Linux version would you?

File_Girl71 December 9th, 2010 07:59 AM

Sorry no!:( I assume you are a Linux or Unix user then...You could still use the Windows version of FW on Linux/Unix with "Wine" as you probably know...It's free and opensource for runing native Windows application on Linux/Unix system!;)

Lord of the Rings December 9th, 2010 09:13 AM

I haven't tried Wine though I downloaded it at a friend's pushy recommendation. lol
No windows window interface, simply run the apps as though you were running them in windows but on either Linux or OSX.

I'm just so used to using several virtual windows interfaces (parallels), win 2000 through to win 7 to simulate what each has so I can test things out. Each saved to a disk image, and each with history options in case something goes wrong.
But Wine sounds like a breeze running win apps as though they were native to your system.

That's ok.
Yeah, I'm a Linux user and spend about 99% of my time in Linux.
Wine is ok but it's really the last resort when there is just no native Linux alternative.
Although I have and know how to use Wine, I choose not to use it.
And I'm not going to run Gubatron's infested FW on my computer. I'll find a native Linux alternative to FW and will post some recommendations here later.
To my Windows using friends and clients I'll give your bundel free clean FW.

Sleepless December 9th, 2010 05:44 PM

If you actually share, not just download, then PM me.

townie2 January 3rd, 2011 05:49 AM

thanks File_Girl71. for some strange reason, my FW just completely disappeared off my 'puter, no sign of it in program files or anything, so of course i downloaded your version, sounds like I'm better off anyway.

File_Girl71 January 3rd, 2011 08:26 AM

CertainlyI hope so too...;) I try hard to remove FrostWire's unwanted behavior and all crap it installs too which we do not need!:D

N9UNQ January 3rd, 2011 10:49 PM

I have the FrostWire version 4.21.3 It is a choice now which one do I open each day, LW or FW So far they aren't hurting each other. I don't think it would be good to run them both. Have a good one

townie2 January 4th, 2011 05:52 PM

i switched from LW to FW a few years ago, FW is like LW Pro.

Tamarama12 January 17th, 2011 12:39 PM

Thanks for all the helpful information! Loving it :)

N9UNQ January 17th, 2011 12:48 PM

I have the FW and the LW. I use the FW more. Getting it from here with there help is great.

xorachellynn March 7th, 2011 02:05 PM

Lord of the Rings May 24th, 2011 11:35 AM

wow File_Girl you have been busy adding the new version installers & without all the adware, junk-ware, etc. included that the original installers want you to install; http://www.gnutellaforums.com/frostw...frostwire.html

townie2 May 25th, 2011 06:57 PM

thanks for the new portable version File_Girl71 :)

File_Girl71 May 29th, 2011 01:56 PM

Problems with 4shared

File_Girl71, could you please upload your latest Frostwire version + installer to Hotfile or Rapidshare? I couldnšt download anything from 4shared. I watched numerous Youtube videos, like "How to download from 4shared", but nothing seems to work for me. :bangh:

Thanks in advance! :xeri_ok1ani:

What happens when you try to download?
Click the blue Download Now button which will most likely be on left side. Then on following page, wait the necessary time (usually around 20-25 seconds).
Then click the Download file now button once it appears after the clock counts down to zero.

File_Girl71 June 2nd, 2011 06:36 AM

What browser do you use when you try to download from 4shared? You can try a another browser then you use as default and se if that will fix the problem...I had a problem like that once, and I used another one like "Firefox" and the problem was solved!

Jere June 2nd, 2011 09:18 AM

Thank you for your replies, Lord of the Rings and File_Girl71!

I normally use Firefox 3.6.17 + NoScript. I allowed all scripts but that didn't help. I was in an infinite loop. Clicking the blue "Download Now" button lead to the same download page and no download link appeared.

I tried another browser (Windows Explorer 9) as File_Girl71 suggested and it worked! Installing now...

Thanks again! :xirokrotima:

Lord of the Rings July 30th, 2011 01:30 AM

I must say, I found File_Girl's 4.20.9 connects far more easily & almost instantly to turbo compared to the original official 4.21 which seemed to struggle for connection before slowly reaching full connection.

Funny how that question was never answered. lol :D FW devs took away users option to disable update notices.

Just as well FrostWire uses the GNU General Public License. Thus may be adjusted in any way without conflict of any patents or copyrights, on condition it is not intended for commercial sale. Open source projects are such wonderful things for the general community. :D

Just to set the record straight with "auto-update", even if this is 16 years later.

We never added an "auto-update" feature, specially after we saw how LimeWire got shutdown.

We were hit with an FTC investigation and we negotiated REALLY HARD not to put an auto-update feature, we managed to settle for an "auto update download" and users decide to install that auto-downloaded installer, it's never executed automatically.

We did this basically because we were forced to, otherwise FrostWire would've gone down too.
