Shares not being shared

New and 1st install Phex 0.9.5.67, JRE 1.4.2_01

Two computers on LAN, both Win XP Pro connecting through NAT router with port forwarding set to route incoming traffic on the port designated in Phex/Settings/Options/Network to the respective client.

Two problems on both computers:

- Contents of directories specified as shared in Phex/Settings/Options/Directories are not being listed as shared in Phex/Share. Confirmed by connecting the two workstations in Phex - search for a very specific file found no hits even though it exists on the connected server. One PC has only one file in shared directories, other PC has hundreds, yet no files show in either copy of Phex.

- No problem searching and downloading files, but all Gnutella Net connections show as OUT - well maybe I speak too soon, now there's one IN. Still, it doesn't appear my system is being found. While my primary concern is FINDING files, I also want to be SHARING.

Suggestions on things I may have set wrong? Things I could check? Could this be a Java 1.4 thing?

Have you checked your "share" window to see if you see any search count numbers ?

VietBob April 25th, 2004 09:58 AM

No, the page is blank - no files listed at all, no uploads ever started (let alone completed)... Again, same on both PC's it's installed on.

Hmmm,
Just a stupid question, but dit you hit apply after choosing your shared directories ?

Anyway, from personal experience, the only times I had strange things going on with phex was when I upgraded without uninstalling previous versions.
Perhaps you could do a fresh install, and make shure you delete the phex folder under documents and settings before you do.

The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

Yes, added and removed directories several times, hit apply every time (or most of the time anyhow).

I'll try wiping it and reinstalling, but since I'm having the same exact problem on two different XP installations, I'm thinking it's more likely has to do with running Java 1.4.2_01 (build b06). I recall seeing something about being stable on 1.3 but 1.4 not entirely tested.

Can I make 1.3 available to Phex but leave 1.4 as the JRE for other apps? If so, what would I need to do to accomplish that?

I have no problems, running Java j2re-1_4_2_04-windows-i586-p-iftw under Win 2K.
Phex 0.9.5.54.

Can you look if you have anything in your phex.error.log

Java 1.4 should be fine to use. Actually there is a bug that Phex only works with Java 1.4 and not with 1.3.

Better dont try to install multiple JRE versions if you are not experienced with Java. It sometimes cause strange version conflicts on Windows.

Error log from one of the computers is attached. It's very busy, something serious appears to be wrong due to a "severe" global exception at every startup. Hopefully the contents will be more helpful to someone with a better understanding of the workings of Phex than I...

Hello Bob,
be sure to put an asterisk (*) into Phex/Settings/Options/Directories/Include Files and not into .../Exclude Files.

Thanks, Helge, that was it! I had Include "*.mp3, *.wav"

So I presume this means one can include/exclude entire directories, but at this time not specific file types?

Is work being done on a man or faq for Phex? With this small exception the installations were simple and painless, and it appears to work very well. I'd be willing to work on either (English) if the information were available to me.
