Phex still alive?

Is Phex still alive and in development?

Latest stable version: 01 Feb 2009
Latest snapshot: 24 Nov 2009

I'm curious about the project status and if there will be a new version in future...

That’s hard to say. I have some ideas for the python/jython shell I added to it, but I am currently absorbed in other projects, since the ideas depend on the i2p port (i2phex; I grew too paranoid to use non anonymous p2p for anything but fansubbed anime) and I learned two times that I don’t know enough Java to update i2phex that myself (in the time I have).

And gregor_k is quite pressed for time, and I don’t know when that will change.

I tried to find a new maintainer for i2phex, so someone could make sure that i2phex and phex are always up to date with each other, but he sadly dropped out again :(.

So we’ll need to wait for input from Gregor when he’ll have more time again.

PS: The most current version is in SVN: http://phex.svn.sf.net/
last change 3 weeks ago (ok, by me, so that’s slighty cheating :) )

I see there's now phex_3.4.2.143 available... when can we expect a new "official" release?

Now Limewire is "dead" a new Phex version can give Phex a boost!

I new version is unlikely at the moment. Gregor does the releases, and his time is in very short supply right now…

You can however use the SVN version which has an included Python scripting commandline UI :)

Please test the latest snapshot. If you think its stable I see no problem in releasing it on sourceforge.

Long time ago... yesterday i compiled the latest Subversion and as far i can see, it's stable... i don't have any problems with it... using Phex as UP on my Ubuntu 10.10 PC ;-)

Hi, GregorK. I am Uchelong. Hope you still remember me. In 2008, I had worked with Phex to gather information and required from you for some helps. Now I am quiting my job and and seeking a new job. I hope I can join you to do some programming things.

GregorK May 18th, 2011 06:54 AM

Hi uchelong,

yes I remember you.
If you like to join the project tell me your Sourceforge user name and I can add you to the developers. Then you have access to the SVN code and are able to submit source changes.

Would be great if you could contribute!

Gregor

my sourcefore username: umatrix. Please add me in! Thx a lot.

You are in :)
Welcome!

I have checked out the Phex from sourceforge.org. I don't know whether it is ok because it took half a day to checkout and stalled at 89% for a longtime when I was using subclipse (subversion) on eclipse.

GregorK May 23rd, 2011 07:25 AM

Strange... usually it should only take a couple of minutes. Maybe there are some problems at sourceforge.

uchelong May 23rd, 2011 09:10 PM

Gregork:
It is ok or enough to checkout the subdirectory:trunk of phex only and to build up the whole phex?

GregorK May 23rd, 2011 11:52 PM

Yes, you only need trunk... the other directories contain old version or other temporary development efforts.

Hi,

I also do not have much spare time but I am working on a project in which I could use phex. If this is the case, I could try and develop a small API so that I can use the phex core from my application. Do you think such a module would be of any interest for phex?

What I need is an API through which I can
  1. Start, stop a phex servent
  2. Start, stop a search and receive all the search hits
  3. Use search results (hits) to retrieve files: start, pause, resume, cancel retrieval, get progress information.
  4. Publish files at a certain path.
If I find an easy way to build such a bridge API and it is of interest for phex, I could contribute it to the project. Or is there such an API already?

Many greetings
Giorgio

GregorK June 4th, 2011 04:07 AM

There are plans and first steps to build such an API. Take a look at the Servent class.
If you build one, we would be very interested to integrate it. I can also give you access to commit your changes directly into Subversion, if you like to.

I have managed to create a small class in my project that starts phex.
Well, I just copied and pasted phex.Main and compiled it against phex.jar.

Regarding a complete API, I can create an interface and propose it to you.

Then of course it would be helpful to have some hints from you as to how various functions should be implemented.
