Newb Client Question

Hi,

I am new to this site. I am interested in developing my own client for Gnutella network. I program in Visual Basic (3 years) and c++ (6 months). However, I have a few questions.

This is a stupid question but are there any copyright restrictions I should know about, (would I be violating any rules of GNutella.Com)..
Have any of you made your own client?

Sorry for all the newbie questions.

Oh one more thing.

I have been researching for the followuing questions:

Different between p2p and Napster. Is GNutella p2p, I wasn't sure if Gnutella had a main server which had files upload to it, or a server that contains a user list which allows p2p access.

Thanks in advance.

go to the files section of the GDF for specs

There are no copyrights, but you should know that developping a gnutella client these days is hard, very hard except if you are a code genius (ą la shareaza) hope you're not alone and good luck!

AFAIK Gnutella.com has nothing to do with any of the clients or the network. Nobody owns Gnet, so you wouldn't be violating anything with that site.

If you develop a Gnet client, you are not violating any copyright law either. The software is completely legal, if the users download copyrighted material, that exceeds your responsability (though some lawyers do not see it that way).

Yes, Gnutella is a p2p network and no, it does not have a central server. It did (or does) have some servers where the programs asked about a list of IPs that were needed to connect to the network, but the network has always been decentralised. Now a new system is used, GWebCache.

You should check the link of the GDF if you want to talk to some developers.
