Poll: should there be a central making a gnutella standart

Hi Everyone

There was a conversation on #gnutelladev about how it would be to have some developer guys together who make a real detailed standart and develop it further.

BTW. Who would want such a group, and who would want to be in it?

(there isn't something specific yet, just the poll)

I love the idea of The Gnutella RFC project (great overview) - http://rfc-gnutella.sourceforge.net/

I think such an effort ist very important for Gnutella's future, the current protocoll (mixture of v0.4, v0.6 and many undocumented things) is too much a chaos. Btw, I think you should replace "the BIG ones" with "the commercial ones (payed by spyware + addware)".

I like the advantages...

I like the advantages for new programmers, if there's a REALLY detailed standart description.

Like you said, it took weeks for you to get the needed necessary information...

Yes,

such a group is good... if this group isnīt dominated by the "BIG" clients Limewire and bearshare like the GDF!

I think I mentioned this some time ago...

Indeed it's a great source of the reference material! Good that somebody finally bothered to create such a site. Hope it will not freeze in the current stage.

Btw, it would be nice if the abovementioned central did some "Protocol Conformance Testing" for various clients, whereas it's a lot of work... But it would deffinetely be of benefit for the health of the network.

There already exists the Gnutella Developer Forum where new ideas are discussed.

The GDF?????? go away, please

did you say GDF?? please, go away, far away from this thread!!

GDF was ruled in the past by Vinnie & co and i don't think it'd play a role in future where the people there create a detailed description.....

be informed

Phantom!

Etzi canīt know what we have discussed, perhaps you should write some more details? :)

I really think it'd be good to get some standards down, so new clients could focus on the interface and features more quickly. Creating a standard for the returning of information on audio files (like MP3 ID3 tags) would be very helpful to all developers, especially if basic source code were given out in various languages. Maybe even create some modules for Perl/C/Java etc. so people can have some ready-written code to integreate into their client for various features?

It'd also be nice to see some cross-client work on developing the network, and the protocol, so that all the clients can integreate new network features easily and strengthen the network. Problems I see currently are the lack of superpeers, and the lack of a decent resume function., which could be aided by more work on the protocol, perhaps with more detail being sent out by superpeers than a list of IPs? I don't know much about the protocol, other than that it's a three step HTTP-style talk between two peers, so that might be wrong, or silly, or impossible. But I am sure the network itself could be worked on more.
