Extending Gnutella to a P2P open cloud

Hiya free friends,

I have developped some extensions of the Gnutella protocol which offer an XML common interface for upper level applications. The purpose is that P2P clients such as Phex, BearShare, Frosty allow not only to exchange files but also applications that can execute inside a virtual machine provided by the P2P clients. Applications may be written in Java or other language to determine.
This way, we will be able to create a P2P open cloud, which is not under the control of private monopolisitic companies or governments.
Does anyone want to go further with me in this P2P cloud concept based on Gnutella ?

Gnutella P2P cloud

Hello moiza,

Currently Gnutella is only used to transfer files. By extending the protocol, it is possibles to have a network of peers which are able to exchange Web services using an XML interface above Gnutella. Also, if the P2P clients evolve, they can execute application code that have been transferred via Gnutella. Then the P2P network of clients becomes a cloud because applications can execute on the Gnutella network, no matter on which P2P client they are located in. Applications such as remote desktops, ubiquitous web servers, resilient emergency systems then become possible over Gnutella.

Thing I'd worry about is there is already file-types such as WMA, WMV and mov etc that have interactive links. Unfortunately these have been abused and misused by spammers. Sometimes to malware infested web-sites. Flash and XML .. both have their dangers. Both leave heavy footprints AFAIK (under the surface). But Devs would know better. I might be wrong.

Using more than one protocol to transfer files for security reasons I believe is definitely one way to go. ie: part of a file is transferred using one protocol, another part another protocol. This helps to mask file-transfers, particularly if TLS or other encrypted approaches are used as are already used in torrent file-sharing. TLS has its limits to my knowledge. There are better approaches. For example, Azureus (Vuse) uses some suggestive highly protective approaches that I would like to be seen used within the Gnutella protocol.

Unless you are getting to more of a DC approach, but in an indirect way so to speak. I haven't used that network in years. :D It would need some kind of protection for the cloud owner/user. A mask of sorts. A guarantee of no form of identification of the owner of the files in the cloud or of any suspicion brought toward them in any such manner.

hello Lovric
i understand more the meaning of your post now! I think that it's great only because there will be more protocols exchange but i just hope that won't disturb the on going ones due to the number of protocols!

Interesting idea.
Security issues need to be addressed when you want to extend Gnutella to a P2P open cloud.
