Please kick freewire from the list, its only Limewire with OTHER spyware!!! I thought it is similar to clean Limewire, without SPYWARE!

Morgwen, relax.

The adware in FreeWire is optional and clearly asks you to install. LimeWire tells you, but you have no option to not install ads or TopMoxie/eTraffic.

So FreeWire can be CleanLW if you choose not to install ads... I'll take that over pop-ups and annoying modules left behind any day.

btw- how is BearShare not a Gnutella client? gawd you ppl.

I am relaxed!

Many people donīt know what these progs are!

They claim they need to pay their bills (in the agreement), which bills? Limewire is doing the work!!!

I really see no reason why we should support an other commercial client, WHEN THEY DO NOTHING FOR IT!!!

They changed the spyware and that is all - WOW WHAT A BIG DEAL!!!

Clean Limewire wanted to help the users, they never wanted to make money with it!!!

btw... there is also agua Lime I think this client is free, I didnīt test it yet... but freewire is a BIG JOKE!

lol

Lol.. Morgwen, I think the reason ppl. might think you're not relaxed is because you end every sentence like this: !!!

that makes it sound like you're going rank in your posts !!!!

heh?!!!!

Morgwen April 25th, 2002 11:55 PM

Ok...

in future I will you tell that spyware are very usefulll tools!

Is this better?

Lol, you make it sound as if I'm attacking your views on spyware. Anyways.. when you say most ppl. don't know what those apps do, so what? Who the hell cares- let them be ignorant

most people don't know how their computer works either

you make it sound like spyware steals people's credit card numbers and ruins their lives.
if you don't like having your clickstream tracked and advertising based on it, then don't install the software.

its' not like there's anything overtly nefarious going on (even Altnet hasnt DONE anything yet...)

file sharing is like high school gossip sessions, I swear

all i mean was that you do this !!! all the time, so it seems like you are excited!!!

Tools like Gator save private information and send them without ancryption through the net (I think also credit card numbers!). And some tools killed a lot OS because they are very buggy!

I think somebody has to tell the people what spyware is and why they should think twice if they install it or not! I want to help the people that is why I am aroung here - but belive me I am relaxed!

Morgwen,

Fair enough- I am in the industry and I have intimate knowledge about what 90% of the "spyware" apps REALLY do.

Gator has in the past been the worst offender- but they don't send any info you dont give them, know what i mean? (they don't send your CC info over the net, they store it locally)

after Gator got away from grabbing ppl's email addresses, everyone's cleaned up their act. I challenge you to show me one
"buggy" mainstream spyware app that is taking down ppl's OSes today. By that I mean the WhenU SaveNows, the Gator/GAINs, the eZula TopTexts, New.net, etc...

Anyways, I may not be one to agree with spyware, but I'm willing to actually objectively look at what it does, why it does it, and what affect that has on me. And as for the why, it's usually to display contextual advertising, not steal your personal info (face it Morg. who the hell wants your personal info??)

Kath,

Well I'd prefer not to say what part I play, but I've been close to "spyware" pretty much since day one.

I find that there's a lot of negative hype, a lot of misinformation, a lot of "black helicopter" theories. I'm all for adware companies to fully disclose, blah blah, and not abuse their positions.

I think at this stage most companies are pretty decent about things- you might view things differently.

The debate just reminds me of the eCommerce one- people are largerly afraid to give their credit card information online to a secure site, but are perfectly willing for a waiter at any restaurant or a gas jockey to walk away with it for 10 minutes... just the usual mistrust of the Internet.

On a deeper level- a mistrust of the corporate world in general... university kids who've never gone out and attempted to earn a living yet...

I imagine LimeWire, BearShare, (esp. KaZaA's) cost to operate is huge.. but no one cares- they want freebies.
