Which languages do you speak besides or instead of English?

This question is mainly for our "not" native English speaking user, because I want to know which other languages do you speak, native English speaker can vote but shouldn´t wonder that English isn´t in the list! :)

Please vote for the languages you speak "fluently". Multiple votes are possible!

Thanks,

Morgwen

OK Morgwen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the second time I have corrected 'Spain' to 'SPANISH !!!!!!!!!!
(In the poll.)

Watch out !!!

A serious comment........
I do not know exactly what you have in mind for this poll, but if it is related to other discussions about 'foreign' language forums, than español must be the first choice for development.
There is little other choice. You only need to examine the true statistics about internet use and the basic facts about the dominant languages on earth. 'Spanish' is without any question the second language of this planet.

backmann May 27th, 2002 09:03 PM

¡¡¡Español!!!

Bueno, yo también hablo español. También hablo un poco de francés y siempre quise aprender alemán, pero la verdad no tengo mucho tiempo.

The other day I went back to the IRC channel, and there was noone there, except somebody whose nickname started with 'n' I think. I can't remember well. Maybe we should schedule some time for us to meet.

cultiv8r May 27th, 2002 09:05 PM

That's right. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. First is Mandarin Chinese and English is 3rd, in case some wondered.

But this poll isn't about the most spoken language in the world, but about the most spoken language by members of Gnutella Forums.

This poll's purpose probably needs to be cleared up a bit. This poll will be helpful in determining if there's a need for a foreign language forum, and if so, which.

Morgwen May 28th, 2002 04:47 AM

Ursula,

Cultiv8r explained it very well...

@ backmann

Hablo un poco espanol. :)

ursula May 28th, 2002 05:17 AM

I hope that the intention of adding another language section to Gnutella Forums is to bring in NEW people in greater numbers.
This will not be served by accomodating the current users who are participating in the poll.
Going by the poll results only one would have to conclude that it would be necessary to start a Deutsch section. This would, I think, be a mistake.
As I have mentioned elsewhere, and which is supported by comments of facts from cultiv8r, español is the sensible choice and would have the potential of bringing in huge numbers of new participants.
It is also easily understood by Italians and to a slightly lesser degree by Português (and Brasil) and French......... That is a lot of people, right?

Is there really another choice for the intital launch of an additional language here?

In my experience more German people than Spanish people visited such sides...

Have a look on bearshare.net their Spanish forum is not very populated there... and there is a German bearshare side with several thousand of posts...

and don´t forget that not everybody own a computer, so if many people speak Spanish this doesn´t mean that many people have a comp and visit the internet - there are many poor areas in south america!

But I think "if" we add new forums... the favourites are German, Dutch, French and Spanish... perhaps Chinese ;)

The good thing is we have mods that speak these languages!

So lets see what the poll say in some days... :)

Yes, I understand (written) Italian almost perfectly, and I think a Portuguese or a French could understand quite a lot also.

FYI: One other thing that needs to be considered, is which countries are most wired. That probably accounts for some of the poll results too.

I once visited a historic site in France where the guide asked in french:
"if you don't understand french, please raise your hand"

All I wanna say is that it is logic why chinese, japanese, russian and arabic got so little votes those people don't come here at all, why should they ?

Although it is true that portuguese is very close to spanish you should note that there is a hostile reaction between members of the two groups in reading something in the other language. Especially so in South America (which by the way should not be called latin!).
There is no doubt that spanish is the third spoken language in the world, however german or french speaking users could be more. Do not forget that the penetration of the internet in the hispanic countries is still at infancy.
For your curiocity I speak greek, portuguese, german and spanish.

Yes Finnish is a slavic from the beginning. The orginal ppl came from to days Rumainia/Hungaria. We was studie that in school...
Oh.. I did that already.

Hungarian -magiar- is a very complicated language. Does it have anything to do with Swedish?? I'd like to know, honestly, I may be studying it in the future.

español is in fact now very close to English in terms of usage on the internet and site numbers.....There are numerous studies which all agree that within the next 2-3 years Spanish will overtake English as the majority user language on the internet.
Spanish is also, if you exclude Chinese from the tables, almost equal to English in usage and dominance worldwide and, again, is expected to surpass English in this decade. The USA government declares that over 46% of the US population speak Spanish. This number is considered to be very conservative.

The Spanish language internet facilities are anything but in early development..... Please have a browse around and you will discover that the 'red español' is enormous with many very high quality sites.

p.s. On planet Earth, the majority of registered motor vehicles and state supported roads and highways are for Right Hand Drive vehicles being driven on the LEFT side of the road!!!!
Not everything is what it appears to be!!!! ;)

Ok when the people come from Rumainia (its a Roman language like French and Spain) and Hungaria (don´t know yet but sure not slavic) but this are also NO slavic languages...

I live in Europe and my parents are from Croatia (a slavic language)...

You should ask your teacher again, and if he thinks its a slavic language he should quit his job...

No, this people came from Asia, the only languages you can compare with are some other Asian languages... but you will not find an other similar language in Europe.

FYI...

Both the Finnish and Hungarian languages belong to the Finno-Ugric group, the main branch of the Urgic group. So they're neither Slavic, Latin, Germanic or Asian based. But that's why they are so closely related.

The people in the Finno-Urgic group started moving apart much longer ago than say the Germanic people. That's why the similarities betwen Finnish and Hungarian is less common than the similarities between Germainc languages.

No Swidish is an Scandinavian language a mixture of germanic (most Germanic) and some French and English. An Swede can if he is reading a German paper understan som of it content, and if he listning he will under stand som of it too, but he have to realy consentrate. We have 28 letters in our alfabet 3 more then English and the are åÅ, äÄ, öÖ.
And Morgwen Finnish IS a slavic language. I have be setablish long time ago, by sientist in Europe. The language have many dubble letter like dubble "kk" "oo" "uu" and so on, in the Scandinavian language it is not alowed. And the teacher was just following the gidelines setup the the Swedich goverments.
and Backman it is clasifide as an slavic language, even if it was long time ago that they moved apart. If I remember right it was about 3000-4000 years ago.
In Europe and Asia minor, around 5000-7000 years ago it was a major mowements of groups that moved crisscross, after the last Iceage. Groupes was moving apart and others merge.

NOOOOO!!!

Finnish is neither a slavic nor a scandinavian laguage, cultiv8r explained it well... the slavic languages don´t use doubles letters like "kk", "oo", or "uu" - you can believe me because I SPEAK A SLAVIC LANGUAGE! Also I am able to understand at least some parts of other slavic languages but not Finnish because its not slavic...

And from 1850 until today we are absorbing English..

So Swedish is a Germanic language, English and French are also influenced by some Germanic languages but, English and French didn`t influence Swedish...

I know the history about the Hansa very well, I live in Bremen its still called "hansa" town..., 140 kilometres away from Hamburg, but the main city was Lübeck not Hamburg!

Sorry about the small misstake about Hamburg here. it should have read Lübeck and Hamburg, (and other city was (if I remember right) Bremen, Travemünde, Rostock later Visby on Gotland in Sweden and at it's hight it was over 200 city's in Germany, Sweden, Polen, Denmark, Russia, Holland, England, Norway, and other battic countrys.) That is why the swedish laungue have so many "loan" words as we call them in Sweden, that incudes French and German words.
